Okay so Penryn is supposed to be released in late 2007 to early 2008

should people just wait for nehalem which is suppose to debut in the second half of 2008?

a new architecture?

I believe this to a point but when there is a pretty good solid eta date. And if your not really in a rush I say wait. I would only buy if I heard rumors of a new product on the horizon with no eta/

Thats just me.. :)
 
the number one rule in computer upgrades: Buy what you need, when you need it. When you current systemstill suffices for your usage, dont upgrade, when you need more speed, buy it right then and there, if you wait for the Next Big Thing (tm) you end up waiting forever

hell, wolfdale/yorkfield isnt even out yet and you are talking about skipping that and sticking out till nehalem, might as well wait for the 32nm die-shrink of nehalem (im not sure if that is gesher, or if gesher is the next-next gen architecture)

so true. the moment you wait for the processors to come out there will be other ones that will be due out for 2009-2010. It's going to be an endless cycle for the things that you want to buy. just buy now and upgrade later.
 
As mentioned earlier, more products which are better will come out. It's just a matter of time. If you don't need a computer urgently or the game you are playing is running smoothly with the highest detail, then I don't see a need to buy one. Also, the Penryn should be good enough since the graphics card is the bottle neck most of the time (not sure though).
 
Presler (early 2006) --> wait 6 months for Conroe

Conroe (July 2006) --> wait for 6 months for Kentsfield

Kentsfield Q6600 --> wait 6 months for price cuts

Price cuts (July 2007) --> wait 6 months for Penryn/Yorkfield

Penryn/Yorkfield --> ...

Get the picture? :)
 
There is NO point in waiting for Penryn/Yorkfield. Wait for X38 and buy then.

What you have to do now is ask yourself "Do I want to buy Yorkfield when it comes out in a year or do I want to buy the Q6600 and be done with it till Nehalem?"
Right now, buying the Q6600 is a horrible waste of money, but in a year or two, having a Quad will the only way (probably), of course by then, u could just get Yorkfield..

And Nehalem isnt going to be here for 3 years, it's just Yorkfield we're talking about now.
 
Actually Kentsfield came out 3 months later but same point all the same.

As for waiting for Nehalem...I dont know if I would exactly advise it. While I have the highest expectations of its greatness, its a brand new core with a lot going on in it. IMO Nehalem will either be a major success, and I do mean major, or it will blow huge chunks.

Penryn on the other hand is without a doubt going to run very nicely. You know it and I know it, theres no risk in taking that leap. The day it comes out you can buy it and drop it into your system without fear of errors, bsods, or compatability issues.
 
Waiting for whats around the corner is the best thing to do with computers. It saves you money and you only upgrade when your current system become too slow for even lite tasks. Then you have no choice but to get what's available right then or continue to suffer indefinately.:D

Funny concept here. People tend to talk more about Intel products in the Intel forum board than about AMD products in the Intel forum board. Kinda funny huh?

However I assure you AMD has plenty worth talking about for the 2H08.

if you add some more ram that might help hold you off. But more then likely I will be waiting until next year to jump on anything.. .right now I just need to get the kinks fixed out on vista x64 so my 4 gigs of ram will play nice with my system.

I mean seriously, I never call the Core 2 Duo a Conroe, I call it a Core 2 Duo.

These names are architectuire code names that Intel used before they announce an actual product name. Most people are just used to calling them Conroe because that's the only name we knew it by until June of last year.

There's also three different versions of C2D chips: Allendale, Conroe, and Merom. Each one has features (or lack of) specific to their product.

Got bored one day, determined that the codenames are mostly based off of bodies of water in/around the design centers/fab in which the products were designed or built. (that's probably posted on the web, too)

allendale = Same everything as conroe except 2mb L2 cache
Kentsfield = two conroe dice on one substrate = 4 cores per processor
Penryn = 45nm die shrink + some improvements + 6mb L2 cache (technically this is the codename for the quad core dual die xeon version of the chip which will be released first, atleast I believe so)


Nehalem = something coming from intel for 2008 (prob late), the "next gen" if you will, I can only hope for single die quad core, plus its widly believed intel will come out with CSI (comparable to AMDs hyper transport) + on die memory controller + w/e else.

Penryn is the architecture family's codename, and also the mobile CPU's codename. It's the same way as it was with Conroe. Conroe was both the family name and the desktop CPU's name.
