penryn backwards compatibility?

hi guys, greetings from the AMD crowd

im currently debating getting a C2D, just doing some prelimenary research and all

what i was wondering is this, if i get say a gigabyte 965p DS3 (good board right?) and a 4300, will i be able to just drop in a penryn 45nm cpu when they come out?

aso, i assume penryn will have quad core counterparts as well?
 
It's not yet clear if it would be compatible since I heard it may require a hardware change to the VRM modules to support the new cpu voltage or a BIOS update. The only way to know is to wait till Penryn is around the corner and motherboard manufacturers release notes about their current lineup compatibility.

 
The 1066mhz bus ones SHOULD work properly... But the later 1333mhz bus chips might not OOTB... BIOS updates abound.

Penryn will have a quad core chip, which scales about 20% faster than the current quads.

By this october or so, the current Quads should be under 300$... I say the price premium for the Yorkfield (penryn quad) just isn't worth it... But we don't know yet :)

As for dropping it in... Probably, but possibly not. As I said, some boards have trouble with 1333mhz. The p5b-deluxe boards DO a 1333mhz strap, so personally, I think this board will have a better chance of the quad working, but that's total speculation.

The DS3 rev3.3 does have a 1333mhz strap, I would say it has as good a chance as ony current board that it might work with a Penryn.
 
hmm, allright then, so its pretty much the same deal as with AMD in the am2 >> barcelona thing, might work, might not work
