Pegatron Exploiting Apple iPhone Workers In China

It's that time of year again where we all act like we care that Apple works people to death for pennies but, as long as we get a new iPhone, we totally ignore that people are working 80 hours of overtime per week making those shiny iDevices. That's 80 hours of overtime per week, not an 80 hour week. :(

Media coverage led to pay rises and improved working conditions at Foxconn. Apple responded by moving some manufacturing to Pegatron, which offered Apple lower prices based on lower wages. It's not as though Apple really needs to screw its Chinese workers, since the company has more than $200 billion in cash. According to China Labor Watch, in 2105, Apple made twice as much profit in China ($13.4 billion) as it paid its 1.6 million Chinese workers ($6.2 billion).

We may not be able to improve conditions in China, but we can punish companies here for human rights violations that happen under their care.

Companies in Asia will do ANYTHING to get orders from Apple, since it's a gold mine for them.

Some companies are better than others, but in general, Asia companies wouldn't think twice about getting workers work overtime (it's cheaper than hiring new workers), and the Asian culture in general is "if you are having fun, you either rich or not working hard enough" type of lives.

It's the same for any device made in China really, it's just Apple gets most of the bad press related to this, since their orders are worth the most money.

That is nearly impossible. That leaves them with average of 6.8 hours per day to eat, sleep, clean, and get to/from their homes.

The Chinese government is more to blame than the foreign (outside of China) businesses that contract with the businesses and factories there. Welcome to socialism/communism where the government controls the means of production...at any cost.

As a former Pegatron employee its not surprising. Was basically a Chinese managed electronic repair facility in America with sweatshop conditions.

Why doesn't Apple do that here in the United States?

Pretty sure the answer has nothing to with Apple.

Am I the only person that saw the company name and thought "Megatron has an older sister named Pegatron?"

They will rise up in arms as soon as their shift ends...

Maybe when they have to pay their actual tax bill, they'll need all this free labor.

EU rules against Apple in multi-billion dollar decision

The European Commission, the EU’s executive body, found that Ireland’s tax dealing with the tech giant constituted illegal “state aid” that gave Apple an advantage over other businesses.“

The Commission's investigation concluded that Ireland granted illegal tax benefits to Apple, which enabled it to pay substantially less tax than other businesses over many years,” said Margrethe Vestager, the commissioner in charge of competition policy.

And that is why Brexit passed. My understanding that this is in "proper" Ireland and not Northern Ireland which was part of Brexit.

Apple slammed the Commission's decision, and cited concerns of the ruling's ramifications on state sovereignty in the EU.

I completely agree with that assertion.

Ahhh certain large motherboard company also uses them for RMAs...

I don't know how many people are aware of this but both Foxconn and Pegatron are not actually PRC (People's Republic of China, Mainland China) companies but actually ROC (Republic of China, Taiwan). A large part of their manufacturing base is located in the PRC however.

Asrock itself is owned by Pegatron.

I don't really see how this is so much Apple's fault. Pegatron offered them lower prices than Foxconn. Apple went with the lowest cost supplier they felt was competent. Turns out Pegatron is working their employees to the bone.

Pegatron.. Megatron's brother that they don't invite to the Deception meetings or talk about often.

the people who complain............. buy an iphone anyway

i don't see those people buying an android phone (which also are all made by slave labor)

lol the people who complain are the ones with an iphone in their pocket. stop buying and the over time demand will go away.

Pegatron is an one of Asus's spin off companies by the way (the other well known one being Asrock).

Pegatron came from the Greek mythological creature Pegasus, which is also where Asus got their name from.

With regards to work hours, Asia is very much a live to work continent, it's not just communism (Korea is vicious when it comes to work place competition), and we are brought up to work hard and do nothing else.

The justification is that, you work for your children's welfare, of course, that goes downhill fast when your kids realise they don't have to work since parents both work, so they end up being spoilt rotten.

Western cultures are much more of a work to live culture. You think of us as being all work no fun, a lot of us think ye as all fun no work.

Different cultures.
