Peeps I Need A New Computer

I need a new computer, my xp 1700 and the total piece of shit 8500 128 mb card craped out ( did I say I will never buy an ati card ever again ) so the past day I have been reading up on northwood vs prescott, amd athlon 64, 2500 + which oc well, nvdidia graphics cards, mb 's which I have no clue what to get etc ... and my brain is fried

I havent kept up on the hardware scene for awhile now since the 3d has started ... its render after render ... that said, I need some advice and guidance ... gaming is not the utmost importance but rather rendering is

Help me choose some new parts ... I want to get something that will kick but in graphics programs, from my readings it seems like the northwoods are the best for that eventhough the prescotts have the bigger cache at least at the clocks out today

I am leaning towards intel but not totaly at this point ... if I do go amd, do not even recommend via boards ... based on past experience I rather not go that way

So I want a fast oc ' able processor ( the higher the fsb the faster the render clock to clock ) - I think hyperthreading would come in handy here so I have been looking for some review / comparisons between the ht and a 64 s with repect to 3d programs but hav not found any

a stable mb with lots of options ... I know my msi bxmaster still going strong so maybe msi but it does not have to be

an nvidia card ( never had one before ) - I heard leadtech are pretty good but which one

and some good ram

I do not update all the time so tell me some parts that I can grow with for a few years

Thanks

The 3500 (939), Abit AV8, 1 gig of XMS XLL, and a 6800GT is what they recommend at the main page. That Av8 is a great value.
edit oops, lol I was tired, WTF 9800GT, lol

wtf? 9800GT? I guess he meant 6800GT; ATi doesn't even use the GT suffix.

Anyway, a plain 6800 might be a better value for you.

VIA's K8T800 Pro chipset's actually really nice; are you sure you don't want VIA? One bad experience isn't necessarily indicative of overall product quality. I'm seconding the AV8 motherboard recommendation, or you could go for an nForce3-250Gb board.

Since gaming aint your thing.

Intel 3.4C(Northwoord, Prescott is crap) , 1 Gb or Corsair 3200 Ram, 6800GT or Ultra whichever you can afford.

well, since he is looking for a high fsb, i dont think hell want a 3.4C (250x17=4250). i think the 2.8c would be better for him, he could possibly get up to 250x14=3500, which would be better clock for clock and have a higher fsb than the stock 3.4c. the 2.8c's are are also known to be great overclockers. Now, i dont know much of anything about the p4's so i dont know what kind of mobo you would need to get a 250 bus, but get yerself some pc4000 ram, and oc the fool out of the 2.8c.

on another note, id go for AMD, but thats just my preference :p. i dont know how it would do in video rendering

also, for professional graphics work, rendering, ect... try to get one of the nVidia cards that are known to mod to a Quadro card... id think even a Quadro based on an nv3x core would out perform a 6800 series, since those are meant for gaming. or you can blow ALOT of cash on a new quadro.. lol

if your going to stick with AMD, id go with the Athlon 64 3500+(s939), MSI K8N Neo Platinum( its an nVidia set, so your via qualm is satasfied. i dont like VIA either :) i chose this particular one becusae you like MSI. there is also a new gigabyte board out based on the nforce3 chipset with s939, but those are the only two, that i know of) a gig of corsair xms pc3500, i dont think the busses on those 64's are going as high as those p4's, so theres no reason to waste money on better ram... if i think of more later ill add it

Peeps? The little marshmallow bunnies and birdies the Easter Bunny leaves behind?

I am not sure the av8 is the right board ... it seemed to do well in video rendering but my main interest is in 3d rendering from maya and lightwave

Currently, maya and lw both support hyperthreading and as far as I know amd does not have any hyperthreading technology. Does HT make a big difference, I do not know, that is why I have been looking all over the place for a review comparing HT and a fast oc amd cpu with respect to 3d rendering

I might just get a barton 2500 + and an nforce two board ... I am pretty sure I can oc that ... I would save some money and wait till things become more clear in the hardware scene

On the other hand, I do not know what to do

Any other advice from you guys

Anyone else into 3d

What would you do

If you are looking at rendering, you should probably look at the AMD Athlon64 range. They offer a huge boost over 32-bit processors, while making you future proof when a ll the 64-bit aps come out.
However, the Bartons and the Northwoods are pretty good oc'ers from what I gather, so you might want to go down that path (Pentium if maya etc. support Hyperthreading). The Northwoods are the most beloved of the Pentium range (well, by most anyway  ), so if you look at that path, look at probably the 3.0ghz chip, and a 875PE-based mother board, such as the ASUS P4-800 Deluxe (ohh, thats a sweet board). With at least 1gig of RAM (more if you are doing heavy-duty rendering) and a 6800GT or Ultra vis card at that would be a great system. Leadtek make good cards for the nVidia chips, so you can't really go wrong there.
If you looked at the Athlon system, the only thing that would change from the above opinion is the chip and the mobo - maybe an nForce2 chipset. Abit make good Athlon boards, but so do a few other vendors, so a look on NewEgg or ZipZoomFly to get an idea of what you want (no neccessarily to buy), and then a look at the vendors websites would be a good idea.

Thats my two cents. Hope it helps :)

EDIT: changed the chipset from 845 to 875, as pointed out below.

Just a correction. The P4800 is a 875 and not a 845 ;-)

PS: I would consider the A64 range. They kill the Pentiums in perfomance  and that for far less money.

PS: I am not a !!!!!! !!!!!! -> look in my sig. But i sold the Rig for an A64.

Oops. Thats true. Imeant the 875 chipset, guess I wasn't thinking (i'm really not good in the morning). Will edit.

did you say fan-b0y twice, or is another word edited now?

I understand that the a64 performance would be better but as I stated in my posts does it still outperform a HT northwood in a program that supports HT, like maya

I have been searching the net for some kind of review but have not found one

Anyone have some numbers on this

Thanks

Well if 2 CPUs or HT are used i am pretty confident that a P4 is faster. The P4s have always been faster in things like 3DSM, and others.
