Is a PDA really worth it? I was thinking about the dell pda's. Taking into consideration performance, portability, and funcionality: are they worth it?

I keep mine to track homework assignments, due dates, tests, grades and what not. good stuff.

I enjoy my Treo 650 for all the things it can do and all the things I can do with it. PDAs have their individual quirks, but they average out to a useful gadget.

i have one, i used it A LOT my freshman year, but since then not to much. I have a Toshiba e750. It was top of the line with Wifi and a CF and SD card slot.

BTW ill sell it to yah ! lol....

Used to have a Sony PEG TH55 but changed for a Sony Ericsson P910i smartphone. This is one serious PDA/smartphone. Couldn't do without it - always on and in my pocket.

I love my PDA. I have a Palm Tungsten E. It was basically the cheapest PDA that had a decent color screen when I bought it and I loved the size and silver finish.

I use it regularly in my every day life and find it very useful. If you get a Palm OS based PDA look up Handy Shopper... can't be beat for grocery shopping. You put in all the items you want, then put in the pices (and you can setup pst,gst taxes etc. as well) and you know how much money you need before you even get your stuff rung up. I absolutely love this software.

It's also great to be able to write down the tasks you need to get done, when they need to be done etc. It really helps me keep on top of things.

I also store bus schedules in PDF format and view them with Adobe Reader... works great!

Personally my advice would be to get the cheapest PDA that will do what you NEED it to do, not what you think would be cool.... From what i've seen browsing websites etc. with WIFI is kind of limited because of the small screen and many people report less than amazing battery life with the WIFI enabled but obviously I don't have first hand experience with that feature.

If you spend a ton of money on it and you don't use it much 5 or 6 months down the road you won't feel so bad about the purchase. If you havn't had a PDA before I'd consider getting a decent entry level unit and make sure you are going to use it.

I use my Treo650 a lot, for HW, appointments, reminders, and things like that. I mostly use it for AIM and stuff. If you see that you're unorganized and you can get start getting use to a PDA and checking it daily for reminders/activities as well as seting up reminders and theres one in your price range without breaking the bank, why wouldn't you? It all matters up to the person if its useful for them or not. If constantly running around and needing reminders, then go for it ;)

I got an ipaq off of ebay to try out to keep track of my schedule and todo list etc but I ended up not using it at all so I put it back up on ebay :p

I use a blackberry which is pretty much a pda. I use mine to lookup news and small stuff on the web and to put notes and password lists on.

Alot of people voted the 2nd or 3rd choice didn't post to say why

the reason i chose the last one is because while it was cool to use, and play games with in class and watch the ocasional movie, it was not worth it really. I replaced it with a ultraportable laptop so i could actually takes nots in class and waht not. I would say that my best purchase within the last 4 years has been my Asus S5n ultraportable laptop. It does everything, i find my self only using my desktop for games now.

But if you are really forgetful, like i am it will be nice. I dont know how the new ones are, but with a PPC if you let the battery run all the way down you loose all the data on the PDA. If you drop it and the battery comes out you loose all the data on the PDA. The first one i got i droped a lot, so much that i had to tape the battery in.

Anyways i a lot of people here at MSU have them, and a much larger percentage have laptops, and an even larger percentage use paper. Its just up to you. A PDA does not have the same space restrictions that a laptop has, you coul dbasically pop it in your pocket and take off with it. WHile a laptop wights a little much for that, that is why my lappy is only 2.8lbs.

But good luck on your search. You might want to consider getting a cheap on off of ebay first and see how you like it, then get a nice one and have the cheap one as a backup incase anything happens.

Oh, how I loved my Diamond Mako, otherwise known as the Psion Revo Plus. It was basically a mini laptop. Then it broke, and I went from that to a cheap Royal DaVinci to a Sharp Mobilon cheap off eBay to a Dell Axim X5. The X5 was great for a while, as with the foldable keyboard I could take notes like I used to on my Revo. But something still felt like it was missing.

Then I got my tablet, and I haven't looked back since.

i have an hp rz1710 i dont use it much for organiser sorta stuff just for doom and music and movies on my sd cards

I have a HP ipaq 6151, it's a Windows Mobile/PDA combo, and I love it. Previously I had owned a Samsung i300 and i330 (both also cell/PDA combos) and I love them too, then I went to a non-pda phone for a bit, and I really missed the extra funtionality.

I have all of my e-mail accounts accessible all the time, including most attachments. Qwerty thumboard makes text messaging and mobile e-mail must easier, I can use pocket IE or Opera and browse random websites when I am bored in a waiting room, I can do a terminal access to my PC to grab a file and wireless print via IR to a printer of I forgot to put it on disk or e-mail it to myself, I can play games, watch WMV movies, listen to mp3s, it is truly an all purpose device. Also, mobile AIM is handy, and the thumbboard actually makes it useful.

The one thing I really don't use it for is organization, I promised myself I would, but I am just as bad about putting appointments and calendar info into this as I was when I tried to use a pen and paper organizer.

I've used 3 HPs for taking down homework assignments, notes, and MP3/Video player. It was definitely worth it. I wouldn't want to downgrade from my laptop for notes but if you are just quickly writing stuff down, or checking excel documents ect there great.

Ever heard of paper?

No what is that?

I used to use paper, but PDA's imho are much better. Its easier to lose a sheet of paper compared to a $200+ PDA...

Exactly. Something you are used to having in your pocket all the time is easy to keep up with, paper isn't. In college I Could never remember what notebook I wrote what down in, actually, those notebooks are still in some closet somewhere around here.... so I guess people don't really lose paper, they just forget what piece they wrote what on and where they put it exactly....
