PCPower and Cooling: Overkill?

I'm looking to buy a power supply for the following rig:

DFI Lanparty NF4 Ultra-D (with SLI mod)
Athlon64 3700+ @ 2800mhz (1.6v)
2x 7800GT (SLI)
250gb WD
36gb Raptor
2x DVDRW drives
8 fans not including graphics cards.

The 430w NeoPower is not enough to keep the SLI juiced up. I'm going off to college in the fall and I need a power supply that I know I can rely on.

The PCPower and Cooling 510 seems like a great choice:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?item=N82E16817703001
but it's rather expensive. I have no problem paying the $212 if it's worth it, but I don't know if there are other alternatives out there that can perform just as well for less money.

What other PSU's should I be considering?

*EDIT* Also, whats the difference between all the different types of 510's? (510 AG, 510 XE, 510 ASL, etc.)

I would get the ocz gamer xtreme instead of the pc and c. get the 700 watt one. :D I believe they are rebadged fortrons and pretty good.

There is no such thing as overkill.

The different model names are for different connectors. Some might have 20 pin, some 24, ssi, more sata, dual pci-e, etc etc. And you can get them to make you a custom supply, for only a bit more.

are you getting your 7800gt's for a ridiculous dea;, or used. because last time i checked 7900 where equally or less expensive. although i could be wrong as this was about a montha go since i last checked

OCZ GamerExtreme is a better deal? What about the PowerStream? Whats the difference?

I already have the 7800GT's... I've had them for a while.

Get the OCZ GamerExtreme newer tech though my 600w powerstream SLI is still holding up great.

Newer tech? What's better about it?

600w powerstream = Topower P6.
600w GameXtrem = FSP Epsilon.

There's a HUGE difference.

ps: have2p, 8331 here. Silentscope is around somewhere, as is xtrememoocow, and a few others. Lws represent.

Those work.

Go with the PCP&C though. There's no such thing as too much, ever.

And with the Ultra-D, try some TCCD ram.

Buy the supply direct from PCP&C. They can customize it to fit your needs, except for fan noise, where you can't be helped.

pc and c is nice, however I believe that overall you can buy better power supplies for your money now, if newegg has the 700 watt gamer xtreme I would get that (to bad its out of stock). (and this from a guy who just bought a used pc and c, keyword though used, it however doesn't mean much I don't know that much about power supplies, attmittingly).

If you're talking about output, the TC 510 delivers less on the +12V rail(s) than the FSP550-80GLC does; 34A vs ~42A.

If you have money to burn buy this power supply. LoL, its actually quite a bit cheaper than the 850 pc and c. However it has only one 12 volt rail. I think cent uses this power supply

http://store.myaopen.com/psl6850p.html
850 zippy all for the cheap price of $322.

specs 5 volt 45 amps
3.3. volt 30 amps
12 volt 60 AMPS

34amps at 50c versus 42amps at 25c. Raise the temp on that FSP to 50c and the field gets a lot narrower. Besides the PC Power and Cooling sports 1% load regulation versus the FSP's 5%, Ac ripple's are different etc.

Edit: and I am not completely sure what the combined 12v is on that FSP ATM since their table has this note on it.
+3.3V &+5V total output not exceed 155W
+3.3V & +5V & +12V1 & 12V2 total output not exceed 530W

I will have to go find a label pic

Yes. It varies based on the connectors you need for you motherboard/videocards etc (Ice Czar posted all the differences a while ago.....if you search for it you will find it). Give them a call and they can get you one that is correct from the stock units or custom wire one for you for whatever you like.

If you check the egg, they have a sparkle SLI power supply thatruns about 550 watts that should be pretty decent for you. Only runs about $105

The only thing mentioned so far that would be a better unit or close to the Pc Power and Cooling would be the Zippy.

Fortron makes good basic spec compliant PSU's....but nothing (IMO) in the league of the Zippy or PC Power and Cooling. If you want a really well informed opinion on the Fortron's (other than mine) ask OklohomaWolf here or over at badcaps.

I have a 510sli for sale because I ordered a 1kquad drop me a pm if interested.

My vote is for the PCP&C....those other PSU's look good untill you look closely at the specs.......Temperature is everything to a PSU and the others cant hold up under load at higher temps....

I have thePCP&C 510 Deluxe and it is as stable a PSU as I have ever owned....

just my .02

Not to knock the PC P&C, but most good PSUs are rated through ambient temps of 40-50 degrees. If they couldn't keep stable regulation (within claimed tolerance) throughout the operating temp range, they would be lying, right?

Fly to Taiwan and pick up an Andyson AD-800 or Seventeam ST-750EAJ. You won't be disappointed. ;)

right and they lie just like home audio amplirier manufactures lie

There are very few if any power supplies out there in the same class as PC Power and Cooling.

No most PSU's (even "good" ones) are not. The spec is 20c. Most PSU's are rated at 25c...with a few rated at 40c or 50c. And stable regulation of what? Are you thinking of derating? PSU's output capacity derates with temp varying from somewhere around 2w/c to 5w/c.

You can knock them all you want, I dont own any of their stock..:)

There are many here who know much more about this subject than I do, however from what I have read, PCP&C PSU's are one of the best.
They rate them @ 50c where most others rate at 25-30c..this means that the 510 is equal to a 650 at lower temps....but they dont sell it as a 650,they sell it as a 510....
I have used many different PSU's and now stick with what I know works for me....and thats a PCP&C unit..

"Operating range" should be the temperature range where all the other specs hold true, isn't it?

Again, no.

The only "governing body" is the ATX specifications put forth by Intel. Those specs say that testing temperature is 20C.

As Spectre said, 25C is the norm because that's room temperature as the PSU are tested on a bench... not in a PC.

The inside of a PC where a PSU is used as part of the exhaust is typically 50C.

I LOVE my PCP&P 1 Kilowatt beast. I will never buy a PSU from any other company after buying from them. The best of the best.

I would buy that zippy if I had the money over a pc&c. Just me though. :p

one more thing, its 25c like the above stated, I could post alot of psu that prove it, but just look on newegg and you will realize that it's 25c.

I understand. Thanks for clarifying.

I don't know about the 50c part I have measured the exit of my psu in several spots, trying to find the hotest part coming out and it has never reached 50c. It did reach 40 but not 50.

True. 50C is worst case scenario. So I don't really deem it any more realistic than any other number.

I'm perfectly comfortable with 25C myself. It IS room temperature. Variance from typical room temperature is going to vary from build to build.

You can go from worst case scenario where the only exhaust fan in the whole PC is the PSU and reach a temp of 50C to best case scenario where there's an intake pushing nearly twice the CFM's as the exhaust and the PSU never goes above 30C.

There are so many things that contribute to the operating temp that finding one exactly at 50 would be difficult......unless you ever see lots of office units. I have this one office where they had all their PC's inside cabinets in the desks.....now I don't know how hot it has to be to delaminate that cheap wood like stuff on desk's.....but by the exhaust for the PSU it had bubbled and delaminated. Poor Sony Vaio 650's.....had to eb put down.

Or you could get the Duro 900 which is basically the same as the SevenTeam 750EAD and readily available stateside.

I am starring at my new !k Quad now. I cannot wait to get it home an install it. This thing is a behemoth psu.

Eash one is individually tested and they come with their own test certification sheet. Of course I am easily impressed.
