PCP&C or Modstream 520

I have a quandry right now. I have just started purchasing parts for my new rig, and have found that I am about 200 over budget. The last thing that I have to buy is my power supply. I really want a PCP&C 510 express PSU, but its 220 price tag is kinda daunting especially being over budget. I have also looked at the OCZ modstream 520. That being better priced, probably not as rugged a PSU but still better priced and modular.

My rig is a AMD 4000+, MSI neo4 platinum, X850XTPE, 1 gig corsair xms low latency, 2 36 gig Raptor 10000rpm HDs, 1 WD 40 gig regular HD, Audigy 2ZS, and 2 optical drives.

Will the OCZ 520 stand up to that system or do I really need to bite the bullet and fork out the other $100 for the PCP&C.

If it were me in your situation, I'd get the PCP&C. First of all I don't like OCZ. Secondly if I were to get a PSU thats not PCP&C I'd get an Antec True 550. Thirdly PCP&C is the best, and the best is what I'd get.

Sparkle makes a damn good eps 12v ssi powersupply on newegg for $99. I use one in my dual opteron setup with a geforce 6800 gtoc and about 7 10k rpm drives total and have never had a problem with it.

I 2nd EnderW on this one..

But my list doesn't really go past choice #1..

Let's put it this way.. you have dropped an assload of money on this rig.. what is a difference of $70 or so, to pretty much guarntee that you will never have any PSU problems.. these mofo's are solid, and consitently outperform the competition everytime... no on else has tighter voltage regulations..

If I were you...and this is just me, I have heard of OCZ psu's "POPPING" on MSI boards.....and taking most or all of the system with it to heaven....so yeah...try antec neopower 480w...

Whats everybody think of the Enermax Whisper II 535. So far I have seen decent reviews and it seems to have the wattage and the amps to push my system. As well as the connectors I want.

Got the MSI K8N Plat SLI. Only running one 6800GT, on a 3800+ cpu. Two h/d's, two CD/DVD drives, floppy, Audigy2 (not using onboard sound), and 5 fans. No intentions of overclocking CPU, maybe 6800GT to Ultra speeds but thats it.

What was going to power this (until I just found out) was my Antec TruePower550.

So, am I forking out more money for new power supply, or maybe just a 20-24 pin adapter? Also if I try to get it to work as is, the 20 pin connector lines up to one side not centered, so locking clip is useless. Is this how its supposed to be.

Thanks,

I've heard that the 20-24 pin adapters aren't too safe sometimes.. but mileage will vary..

I have a PCP&C 510 ATX SLi, running on an Intel 20pin ATX board with an adaptor with No problems what so ever. They even included it in the box with my PS. Only downside to the 510ATX series is that they are a tad loud.

Hey keimigca

You have a fair amount invested already, Don't skimp now !!!

Go with PCP&C and you won't ever have to think or wonder if "it's the PSU" :)

The new OCZ PowerStream 520W are fully SLI ready & with adjustable pots, tight regulation, ultra low ripple & noise,
5yr warranty & that famous OCZ customer service, it is the obvious choice. ;)

PowerStream NOT ModStream!

$135: http://www.svc.com/ocz520adj.html

PCP&C 510ATX Deluxe SLI Has more power on the 3.3v rail (30A vice 28A). More on the all important 12v Rail. (38A vice 33A) The same regulation on the +3.3/+5/+12 Rails. Better Ripple control. 6 vice 2 Sata Connectors. Better efficency 70% at Max Load vice 63% for the OCZ. The 3.3/5/12 are adjustable. And it has the same warrenty. I have NEVER had a problem with PCP&C and their coustmer service is top notch.

Remember the old addage you get what you pay for. In addition OCZ does not state what tempature their power supplies were tested at. All of PCP&C outputs are rated at 40C while most other manufactures are rated at 25C.

I fully agree that PC P&C make the BEST PS's! :D

However their high price cannot always be justified or afforded. ;)

I second everything you say, except that PCP&C has the same regulation. OCZ's are rated for +/- 3%. PCP&C is +/- 1% ;)
Also, will OCZ 2-day cross-ship a new supply to you when something goes wrong?
It's just the little things like that, that make a difference

Actually if you check out this link OCZ claims 1% regulation on the important rails. (+3.3/5/12) Which is the same as the PCP&C.

I'm sure the PC P&C unit is fantastic, but I will not comment on it as I do not own one. However, I have just finished a system with a ModStream 520, and I can tell you it was fabulous. Quiet, solid voltage (3.36 on +3.3, 5.06 on +5 and 12.02 on +12), and plenty of power. Enough for a 3500+ Winnie, DFI NF4 SLI-DR, 1GB Corsair, 6800GT, 2x WD740GD, 160GB Hitachi, NEC 3520A and all of his fans. The power supply was fantastic. When we ran Coolbits 'Detect Optimal Frequencies' on his XFX 6800GT PCI-E, we got 440 core/1180 RAM over the stock 350 core/1000 RAM, stable/artifact free in 3DMark and WoW. You are not going to get 440/1180 with just any PSU. No CPU overclocking yet, but I'm sure it can handle that too. ModStream is a great unit.
