Hey Guys,

I am seriously considering purchasing a ASUS Xonar Essence STX, or a Auzentech Auzen X-Fi Forte as a sound card, and as a can amplifier. My current mobo, the MSI P7N platinum, only has 1 pcie x16 slot, and 2 pcie x8 slots.(The mother board can be found here:http://us.msi.com/product/p_spec.asp?model=P7N_SLI_Platinum&class=mb)So no x1 slots, that is required for the cards to operate. I read that the x1 is compatible with the x16 slots, but it varies from motherboard to motherboard. So I just want some assurance that it is possible for my current setup, to go and purchase one of these cards.

Thanks, and any advice is much appreciated.

The only thing that would a problem, if anything, is the tab on the back of the PCI-e slot interfering with the actual slot on the board. It looks like you should be fine.

All PCI-E cards will fit in the slot they are designed for as well as all larger slots. So 1x cards will work in any slot, 4x cards fit in 4x and larger, and 16x only fit in 16x slots (although some boards come with open-ended 4x slots so you can put in a larger card).

That's true, that's the way it was designed, however I have seen where some people don't follow spec, either the motherboard manufacturer or the card manufacturer. It probably won't be a problem, but I have seen it be a problem in the past. One or two times, nothing big.
