PCIe SATA card

This is my first post to the forum but I've been reading it off and on for a while.

I recently bought through eBay a IBM M1015 (aka LSI 9240-8i) card. When I placed it in my ASUS M2A-VM HDMI motherboard it initally was not detected. I eventually found that I had HDMI enabled in the BIOS and therefore the board was expecting a ASUS riser card to be present in the PCIe x16 slot. After disabling that and rebooting, the card's BIOS appeared but this not brought on my next problem.

I run Linux and GRUB reported "GRUB Error 28 : "Selected item won't fit into memory". Upon much research I determined that this is similar error that other people are getting in the Windows land "No physical memory is available at the location required to load the Windows Boot Manager. The system can not continue."

More research yielded several people with the same problem but no solution. I have upgraded the firmware on the card to the latest (20.10.1-0029) from http://www.lsi.com/storage_home/pro...as/entry_line/megaraid_sas_9240-8i/index.html however this did not fix the problem.

My research and pointed me in the direction that not all PCIe slots are created equally, especially on lower end motherboards. It appears that the PCIe slot on my MB is specifically build for graphics cards only or there may simply be some incompatibility.

So now I have a quandary whether to replace my MB (and possibly CPU and RAM as a result) or find a new card. I'm not looking for major performance but something better than what I'm seeing with my on-board card (more below). This IBM M1015 is a PCIe x8 so I was looking forward to faster speeds. The options I'm looking at are:

HighPoint ROCKETRAID 2680SGL
SuperMicro AOC-SASLP-MV8

I'm concerned about compatibility with my motherboard so any thoughts on these cards or other suggestions is appreciated.

Not sure about your motherboard PCIe issues, but I've got the SASLP-MV8. Initially I had a few issues with having disk dropouts, but have since upgraded the driver and everything seems stable.

1st thing I would try is modifying the 1x PCIe slot (cutting the back out) & try the m1015 in that. Would at least get you buy even if it will cripple the speeds some (not positive it will work, but I know that the trick works with x16 video cards so I dont see why it wouldn't).

On a side note though I actually just got a m1015 delivered from the FS/T forums here yesterday & it worked fine in the x16 slot in my Asus 740a board (so a little newer, but not any higher end then yours)
