PCI SATA card problems

Hey All,

I recently got FIOS so, of course, I had to put a Windows 2003 server up for remotely connecting to my home network and also to be an ftp server for my friends. I used an old Intel Garibaldi D850GB motherboard with 1GB of RDRAM that I had collecting dust as the basis of the system. I'm running a 1.4GHz P4 (Willamette core, how's that for old?) and the OS is installed on a 200GB Seagate 7200.7 drive.

I recently bought 2 WD 400GB SATA2 drives and a generic VIA VT6421-based PCI RAID controller card. The drives were not RAIDed and everything seemed to go well upon initial install. When I tried to copy a lot of data (somewhere around 6GB) from my PATA drive to one of the SATA drives, the system would blue screen and reboot.I read alot of bad stories with Win2k3 and the VIA controller so I decided to get rid of the card. I exchanged the RAID card for a non-RAID SIIG PCI SATA controller based on the SiI 3512 chip. Unfortunately I'm getting the same errors on this new card which makes me believe it's something with the system. Could there be an issue with saturating the PCI bus?

Right now on the PCI bus I have the SiS900-based Ethernet card, a generic USB2.0 card (currently unused), and the SATA controller. Other than PCI bus saturation, the only other thing I could think of is the WD drives might need to be force to work only at 150mb/sec instead of their default 300mb/sec. Any thoughts?

I would like to get all of this working together but if there is no solution I may have to bite the bullet and buy a new mobo+proc+memory...sigh.

Thats actually pretty odd. I, too, wouldve first blamed the controller, is certainly not the PCI bus thats affecting the transfers. I might suspect the drives, but if they had no other peculiarities, its definitely something else.

I think I got it.

I found an old CNR NIC and replaced my PCI NIC with that and moved the SATA card to the bottom slot. Now, as if by magic, I just copied 60GIGs of data from my PATA drive to my SATA drive while connected to the server via RDP.

Does CNR go over a different bus?

Hopefully I'm not celebrating too early.
