I have an old computer that I can use for a media server. I was thinking of getting 2 promise SATA 2 cards. The thing is they will be connected via PCI. This is not a PCI express board.
So I am concerned about speed. I want to be able to stream HD content from the server over my gigabit network. I'm told I need a consistant 30mbps transfer speed for HD. Will that be possible from PCI sata cards?
I'm still debating between using unraid and WHS. I have heard that unraid, while allowing drives of different sizes, doesn't combine them into a single drive. They will still be considered seperate drives which I don't want. But I like parity of it.
WHS does combine all drives as one drive but it's redundancy method is basically mirroring which is going to eat up exactly half of my hard drive space.
