So I'm taking some old computer parts and making a file server. I'd like the core of the storage system to be a RAID-1 setup. Also, I'd like this RAID setup to be OS-agnostic - I.E. completely hardware RAID so that only one drive shows up to the OS. I don't want the OS to even know it is dealing with a RAID drive.

Since this is an old drive, I'll need a standard PCI card (no PCIE).

Any recommendations?

The OS should definitely know it's raid 1. Otherwise, how could it let you know if a drive goes belly-up?

Is this an IDE disk or sata? What's your budget?
 
Hmm, I was hoping it would beep or something. Oh well, I guess I had the wrong idea. I was thinking I would like to get some SATA drives.
 
It may well beep, but it's probably a good idea to let the OS know there's a problem so it can shut down or log a message about it so if someone comes by and disables the alarm you can still tell there's a disk down.

What size are you thinking about? OS or data or both? What's your backup plan? What's your budget?
 
I was thinking about getting some 500GB disks. Data only. I'm going to have a cron job set up to rsync to another non raided drive nightly and also possibly weekly (Going to be running linux). I hope to not have to spend more than $700 for the drives and raid controller.
 
You might be better off running Linux Software Raid; it's rather flexible and way cheaper than dedicated hardware. In any case, 500GB disks are really cheap at Newegg ($100 for 7200.10s!) and Areca makes real hardware raid.
