I have a friend who has a Emachines desktop with NO AGP or PCI-E slots
it has a Celeron 2.5Ghz and 512MB ram.

we have started playing UT2004 and WOW

he has a Geforce 4MX 4000 PCI at the moment he wants to upgrade to something better.... if such a thing exists

now since this is old tech I'm having trouble tracking down comparable benchmarks to tell him what to buy

I'm interested in the new Visiontek X1300 PCI that just came out but it is rather expencive for the performance.

the next fastest i PCI i can find is the Geforce FX5500
http://www.tigerdirect.ca/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=1520540&CatId=0
and the ATI 9250

is the X1300 worth the price premium?
if not which of the other two would be the best choice?

the 9250 was/is a dog... you're better off with the nVidia solution. I just had to replace 2 9250 cards. I think both were MSI.

The x1300 is the newest GPU of the lot you mentioned... may be worth the price premium if your friend isn't wanting to upgrade that e-Machine.

Just as last poster said... Unless you want to pay the 150.00 for the x1300 or just get a new system, I would get one of the nVidia solutions. You cannot expect a whole lot out of PCI video.

you can try the nvidia 6200 PCI (non-express) I just upgraded a friend with an old eMachine to that as well.
I think it was around $50 at newegg.
One problem is that he also wanted to use a TV tuner in addition to the 6200PCI but it would not work (worked fine when he just used the onboard vga, but as soon as he added the 6200 PCI, the PCI TV card stopped working again).

I have the 6200 pci in my car computer and it is total garbage.
All kinds of graphical glitches in 2d mode.
Did a little research and discovered many suffer from it.
Performance is ok for a PCI series card. It plays fear, css.
Just a heads up.

hmm interesting ive never seen the 6200 before

ill have to take another look around see if i can get it anywhere other then newegg
that whole being a canuck kills of the newegg option

Kinda off topic, but why does NewEgg NOT ship to Canada? There's like five bajillion people there who would probably buy craploads of parts....missing business opportunity IMO.

That X1300 PCI is an intresting card. Benchmarks show that it will can keep most games older than Oblivion and FEAR at acceptable framrates (Qake 4 @ 30FPS, 1024x768, low quality). Just dont expect to run much higher than 1280x1024 or 1024x768, or with details turned up.

would the x1300 pci be able to run higher settings but at lower resolutions?
i know resolutio needs much higher throughput but do shadder effects and stuff?

The X1300 doesn't have much in the way of shading power....I have a mobility version and I can run Halo @ 1280x800 maxed out, but only when my laptop is plugged into the wall. I can also run Republic Commando at moderate settings (Unreal 3 based engine). Call of Duty 2 runs at bare minimum settings at 640x480.
