PCI IDE Card won't work!

I got a Maxtor ATA133 PCI IDE card. I plugged it all in, and connected a Seagate 80GB drive to the first channel. The drive's jumper settings are on "cable select." I booted up, and nothing happens. Niether the drive nor the card are recognized. I am running Windows XP Pro. Anything I should be doing that will fix this problem?
 
The first thing I would do is change the drive to be a master, and put it on the end of the cable. I never use CS anymore, as it leaves more to chance than setting the drive to the position you want. I had problems with a Promise Ultra100TX2 using cable select on a friends PC, an Promise's tech support told me to set it as a master. Maxtor rebadges Promise controllers, so this might fix it. You also have to set the BIOS correctly to boot from the controller card.

Wow, but yet some people insist on arguing with me that cable select is better. Imagine that. Vindication is a sweet sweet thing. Glad it's working.
 
well, at least we got some documentation that cable select was the issue.

While I know that I'm going to be inviting more flaming to myself for this, I just have a couple of questions.

Are you using an 80 conductor cable?
Was the drive at the end of the cable?
 
Let's hope he's using the 80 pin cable....for performance sake.

Which is yet even more proof that Cable Select does more harm than good.
 
In fact, "Cable Select" is only usable with a special Cable Select cable that's far more expensive than other IDE cables. Most IDE cables - rounded or ribbon - are not designed for Cable Select operation.

Whoops. I stand corrected. :eek:

I had incorrectly extrapolated the Cable Select support of ATA cables from my experience with cheap ribbon-type 40-conductor cables. Now I realize that all ATA66/100/133 (80-conductor) cables support Cable Select.

And generally, you should set all of your drives connected to the 80-conductor cable to Cable Select, unless you're using a controller which doesn't support or work properly with Cable Select. The Promise PCI Ultra ATA controller cards are among the few Ultra ATA controllers which don't work properly with Cable Select.
