I'm trying to decide if it's worth it to get a mobo with 2 x16 slots for crossfire or if two x8 is ok. Is there a huge performance decrease between the two? I will be running two 4850's or possibly a 4850 and 4870 if I can find a board with crossfireX. I've tried googling an searching the video card and mobo forums and can't find any recent comparisons. I've seen some info online that I could get a 15-20% loss but it was an old post.

I am running two 4870 512's in cfx in my lan gamer, and I have seen no hit on performance. Remember x8 2.0 is still as good as x16 v1. Bottlenecks seem to occur at x4 and lower.

These links might help...kinda what you are asking...maybe :)

I was in a similar debate a few months back when I decided to go CF...didn't really want to switch mb (in sig) but to get the full benefits of CF I should have...in the end I went CF anyway and still saw a huge performance jump and am happy...my logic...and this is just me...how can I notice the extra performance if I have nothing to compare it to...flawed I know but....the jump from an 8800GT to 4850CF on my semi crippled board was still huge!!

I wish someone would do a comparison with the 4870x2/4850x2 cards. It has been rehashed enough times to show that the single gpu cards don't really notice a difference but no one has done a comparison with one of the new generation gpus. The 9800GX2 done by toms was interesting, but if I'm going to be playing game with these cards, I'm not going to be playing at low res with little to no aa/af on.
