What's the advantage of having PCI Express x4 slots on your motherboard? I see that some newer MBs have it whereas some don't. What's the deal with this?
Is it this a future proof kinda thing or something?

Thanks for any comment

PCI-Express slots are fully backwards compatible. That means you can toss a 1x or 2x card in that slot, it'll fit, it'll run, and it'll only use waht it's able to use.

Sometime soon, we might need 4x slots, so, you'll have that option, if not, you can use a 1x card in there. It's just handy to have : )

Pci-e 4x has much better bandwidth than regular pci slots so as you stated it looks to be there at this point for future options. The advantage at this point if your someone like myself that upgrades 1 1/2 to every two years is future proofing yourself.

It's for PCIE x4 devices. I only know of a couple SCSI Raid cards that can use them right now but I'm sure more devices are coming.
