PCI-Express Power Connection

Hey folks,

I'm new to PCI-Express... just installed a new XFX 7800GT. My question is as follows -- The card has a male molex connector mounted on the board, which was a bit of a surprise since I had expected a PCI-Express power connector a-la the cable that came with my NeoPower 480. I figured it was just XFX makin my life easier, so I plugged in a standard molex connector straight onto the card and it seems to work fine. Now -- said connector was on a line with 3 connectors in total, and my Hitachi SATA drive was close enough to use another connector on the same line. Is that ok, or should I give the 7800 its own dedicated line? Its all running off the same rail anyway right?

Im still installin drivers and apps and such, so I haven't fired up Everquest yet to test it... So I figured I'd post here and get your expert advice before I fry the card.

Thanks!

The drive spinning up and down on the same line as the card is on can cause the card to get a bigger voltage fluctuation than it would if the card was on it's own dedicated line. Yes it all comes from the same rail but but the closer the card is to the drive the greater the drop in voltage to each device.

If you've got a DMM handy hook the leads into the plug going to your card then fire up disk defrag on the drive running on that line, take note of the 12V during the defrag. After that hook the card up to it's own line then doo the same thing and see exatly how much the voltage fluctuates. I'm willing to bet it won't be as great.
