I have a 3.4ghz p4 setup and works great..but im stuck in the AGP world.. and with the upcoming Quake4 and F.E.A.R. my 9800pro is feeling outdated. I know eventually I will build a new machine but at this moment I really dont have the funds (just bought a house) sooooooooooo.... anyone know of a way to put a pci express card (since they are cheaper and more bang for the buck) in an agp slot? I know they make those convertors to go agp-> pci-express but is there any the opposite way?

Sure! of course! You just cut the extra connectors and slot it right in. Like this: http://www.hardocp.com/images/news/1126113153nlhmQdmQeo_1_1_l.jpg (courtesy of weebling)

You might have problems actually starting though. Maybe a beep hear and there. But a beep never killed anyone.

Check out the ASUS P4GD1, that's how you're going to do it.

Only 478/Intel Chipset/PCIe board I know of from a reputable company

I'd consider migrating to another mobo, like THIS ONE That'll allow you to keep your p4 and update to pcie when you get tired of that 9800 pro. More information about it HERE

Why waste your time just buy a Better AGP card.. 2nd Why would you even try to stick an PCI-Xpress Card in an AGP slot when that card is suppose to run a certain why and if it does work that card will not even run half as good as if you had the proper board to run that on.. If you ask me Just sell your P4 setup and Go wit a real setup AMD 64 only way its meant to be playied...

ROFL!
/ME LIKES slyven'S STYLE

( but you should have posted the link to the thread with the pics so he could cut it properly)

WTF is wrong with you?

dont you guys ever read the front page?
almost a month ago : http://www.hardocp.com/newsarchives.html?news=U2VwdGVtYmVyLDIwMDUsMjIsMjEw

"GF 7800 Mod:
Tom Walsh spotted this somewhere on the internet and thought we should share it with you guys. Apparently this guy thought cutting off the lower portion of his new GeForce 7800 would make it “fit” into his motherboard. Oddly enough, the video card doesn’t work after sawing the bottom off. Weird. "

In retrospect, it seemed much funnier at the time. But the question just begs for sarcasm. I mean think about it. Its like asking if there is a way to get Ps2 games to work on a Ps1. How to Burn a DVD+RW in a CD-RW drive. How to get a grandmother to dance like todays tennagers :D .

Frankly, its a stupid question (And I mean that in the nicest possible way.:D). Anybody who know enough about technology to post on a forum, should know this. I have not ,as yet, every heard of foward compatibility with most of PC hardware average gamers are conversant .....Well, there is RAM e.g. DDR400 going down to DDR333 if 400 isn't supported, But i don't think I would put it in the same class. They are all of the same DIMM slot type.

But let me contain myself for a bit. No, a PCI-E card will not work in an AGP slot. The AGP port is not foward compatible. Like many have suggested, I would go with a new mother board.
If you can, do sell of your old system. You better do it now before your stuff becomes too outdated to sell at any decent price.
If you don't want to go through the hassle of selling your old stuff, or don't have a large reserve of cash around, then just get a intel PCI-E motherboard that works with that processor.

Alternatively, you could just get a 6800GT or U. They are pretty cheap now. And they are powerful enough to last you about a year (if you can live with having to scale down your settings every 3 or 6 month period), however I would not recommend this path. In the end, you waste money as you will HAVE to upgrade to PCI-E soon. OEMs adopted it, en masse and in that way AGP died. Current Top of the line cards have no AGP version (The 7800 and the x1800) and this will eventually travel down to all cards.

Just lemme put it this way: Have you seen a plain old PCI gamer gfx card around lately?
