I'm trying to put together a Untangle box to use as a home router. I decided that instead of putting a computer together I was just going to purchase an old Dell/HP on ebay on the cheap. Looking back this may have been a mistake..

I bought the esteemed HP DC7100 SFF pc and bought a Dell (intel) PRO/1000 pt PCIE dual port card. On boot, the computer doesn't recognize the NIC and gives me a: "921 -Device in PCI Express Slot failed to initialize" error.

Unfortunately I cannot test the card as I am living in circa 2005 and do not have a computer with a PCIE slot (pm me if you're in the seattle area.....) I also don't have any other PCIE cards to test the slot

To make things more interesting, I updated the BIOS firmware and the card worked! until I reset the computer. I'm not really sure what to make of that....

I have reset the CMOS, removed the card, reinstalled the card, rebooted, etc etc

advice?

Have you tried disabling the onboard nic controller in the bios before trying the stand-alone intel NIC card?
The onboard NIC controller may be fighting over resources with the intel card.

Did you ever get this to work? Im trying the same thing. Cant find a bios flash i can do from usb or cd. I messed around in the bios but cant get it to work. If you got it to work i might keep trying
