Has anyone ever thought of taking 2 different SLI cards, one a high speed performer and the other a high quality performer, and put them together in an SLI configuration just ta see IF 1. that it can be done, and 2. just ta see which configuration would work best to achieve a best overall performance??? Kinda like the old days of getting the Voodoo 3 3500 and having it in the other SLI config with a really good card just ta see what the outcome would be. Personally I'd like ta see what happens when you mix-match an nVidia and an ATi SLI card in the same system. Would that even be possible???

Not possible, there is a SLI connector that must be used to connect the two Nvidia cards. Even if it were possible who would write the driver to make the two brands work together ??? You ? :)

His question brings a more interesting and less crazy question to my skull's chewy nuget center.

Can you set up an SLI configuration with for example a BFG 6800 and an EVGA 6800?

Will cards from different manufacturers play nicely together?

I think that is obvious that is much "safer" to use two cards from the same manufacturer, but has anyone seen any info on, or had any experience with two different manufacturer's cards in SLI?

They are supposed to be the same brand, etc for SLI to work correctly and efficiently. And, second, while not in SLI mode, installing an nVidia card and an ATI card in the same system is possible. I think Toms Hardware did so already.

Not completely true.
People have had SLI setups with motherbaords that only have one PCI-express x16 slot and 1 PCI-express x4 slot. Without an SLI connector.

I think the question is what if you throw a 6800 ultra and a 6800 into an SLI setup. If you are lucky enough the SLI connector slots would even match up .

A lower performer and a higher performer wouldn't work. This is not unlike SMP. You can't mix a 6600GT with a 6800GT. This about how SLi renders. You would have one card that does it's job really fast and the other one that has to do it slower. If it did work you'd bring down the performance of the higher end card.

ATi and Nvidia drivers aren't compatible. Therefore SLi wouldn't work between the two of them. Even if they were pin compatible.

As far as brands go, I'd say not. Subtle differences in manufacturers and BIOS's might prevent them from working together. The best idea is to get two of the same card.

I'm not really sure why people are hung up on the idea of using two different cards. Why is that appealing?

Its the ultimate path to upgrading.

6600gt - 6800 -6800gt - 6800 ultra

Just imagine how many combos you could make with that. Ebay would be a god send if SLI worked this way.
