Stupid question...finally upgrading to a PCI-Express 16x card. Looking at the Sapphire 850xt.

says on product specs pci-express 16x but I'm not getting a board with 16x PCI...just 1xpci-e.... will the card still function or is this card ONLY for pci16x slots?
 
I think you might have a problem. I'm not an expert by any means, but I know the PCI-X slots are big and the 1 x slots are tiny. I'd look for another board.
 
All I needed to know... Thanks. I looked around in google but couldn't find the info. Looks like I'll just bump up to the 4000+ athlon and get the 16x pci board.

Any suggestions for dual-channel ram to put with it? I have some already...but I'd like to upgrade it. This computer is used strictly to play HL2 and UT. System really won't do anything else as I have other systems to do those functions.

Probably going to use one of those 74gb raptor drives too... Imagine that's my best bet since the amount of storage needed is only enough for a handful of games.
 
nope pci-e1x is a much smaller slot.

the combination of those 3 products will be insane. i wish i had your bling

No, there are other slots than 16x, just most PCI-e motherboards implement only the 16x. For example, my ASUS A8N-SLI Deluxe has two PCI-e 16x slots (used ini 8x mode when doing SLI), and two PCI-e 1x slots (very tiny in comparison). Eventually you'll be able to get everything from modems to NIC's to soundcards in PCI-e form, and many peripherals won't require the potentially insane bandwidth of 16x.

In this case though you're partially correct at least, it means it has 1 16x slot :)
 
I haven't looked into this pcie stuff much but from what I can tell it only works (at least the 16x) with the boards which support the new higher end processors from both AMD and intel correct?

I couldn't find a board with pcie 16x that supported anything other than s939. Which is fine...because that helped me decide to go with 939....which I know I'll be much happier with.
 
You can indeed install a video card into one of the PCI-E slots, it will look stupid, but it should work. Probably be very slow however due to it only using 1 channel. I've seen someone put 2 6800's on a non sli board and mod it to get SLI. One of the slots being on the 4X and the other on the 16X. I would assume that the card gets its power from the small tab closest to the edge of the board, and the other pins are just PCI-E channels, however many actually make a connection are how many you get. I plan on buying an X300 and 2 LCD's for a 4 monitor system, I could care less about 3D on the 4X slot, but 4X would be enough for a slow card like that anyway I bet.
 
just get a new mobo...why spend 400-500 dollars on awsome vid card and have mobo that can barely support it? get msi or dfi :p
 
that system is gonna own once it's all setup and tuned to perfection. I'm an nVidia junkie but good choice on the top-of-the-line card. enjoy!
