PCI-E16x vs PCI-E8x ?

Here's the deal.

I have two 285GTX in SLI on an ASUS Rampage II Extreme

The problem is that the PCI-E16x slots are too close together on the motherboard and the cards are basically sandwiched together, with no space between them for airflow - so this makes them run pretty hot.

Now the question: if i stick one of the cards into the PCI-E8x slot that is spaced much farther from the PCI-E16x slots thus giving the two video cards plenty of space between them - would that impede the performance? I suppose that both cards would be running at PCI-E8x speeds? Is that much worse than having both of them in PCI-E16x ?

There was another thread about this just recently.

Here

There should be some answers there for you.

Edit
I'm not the most knowledgeable myself, but I would figure it would have more of an impact if your PCI-E slots are 1.0
If you're running them in PCI-E 2.0 slots it's my understanding that x8 is equal to the bandwidth obtained from a PCI-E 1.0 x16 slot.

Anyway, here are my options:

a) 16x 16x - but cards sandwiched together and run hot

b) 16x 8x - cards spaced out good, with better airflow between them for cooling

What do I go for?
