pci-e x1 compatible with normal pci

Like above, nope.

But to elaborate: PCI-express is a serial electrical connection, and regular PCI is parallel.

Also, the x1 connectors are not the same size as a PCI connector anyway.
 
As long as this topic is here, I might as well ask this question:

What are those PCIEx1 slots good for? AFAICT, there aren't any devices currently available that use them, and I haven't even heard anything about such devices in development. Is there any reason for this?
 
Well, the only x1 PCI-Express devices I know of are some gigabit ethernet cards. Of course, most any current motherboard you can buy already has one. Other than that, demand hasn't been there for any PCI-Express devices these days except for video cards I guess. They'll probably make hard drive controller cards, but with current mobos sporting 2 IDE slots and up to 4 SATA connectors (maybe more), that also isn't gonna be a high demand device I think.

you hit the nail on the head...almost everything is already integrated onto the mobo so besides a vid card there is nothing else for the pci-e bus...i mean take a look at the DFi nf4 series (which i have and love) it has integrated usb 2.0, firewire, 5.1 sorround sound (maybe 7.1 i cant remember),ethernet and an additional gigabit ethernet port with an integrated hardware firewall...what else do you need really

I've heard (don't recall where) that almost all games today don't need more than AGP4x, so the only benefit that you'll see from a PCI-E graphics card is bragging rights. The GeForce4 MX420Go w/ 16MB shared vid RAM in my lappy does everything I'll ever need-- and I'm using CorelDRAW! and Photoshop on there, sometimes simultaneously.

And I've heard of someone running Half-Life 2 on a 3dfx Voodoo3 graphics card and getting good framerates-- and that card's as old as my 386!
 
PCI-express x1 connectors allow throughput of 500 MB/s, way more than 1.2 Mbps. Scaled up to x16, that's 8 GB/s, capped at 4 GB/s in each direction. AGP 8x provides only 2.1 GB/s maximum. So that's about 4x faster right there. But you are right, nothing really takes advantage of anything beyond AGP 4x. Of course, we need these faster interfaces before developers will begin to touch them, so it's still good we have them.

Also, unlike regular PCI, PCI-Express is not a shared bus. The PCI express makes all devices on the PCI bus share 133 MB/s. In PCI-Express, every device has their own dedicated bandwidth.
 
I think that Creative's next soundblaster card will be avalible for PCI-E x1, and Ageia's PhysX chip will be avalible for PCI-E x4. I don't think either of these will actually benefit from the extra bandwidth, however, PhysX might a little.

Interfaces are alaways way ahead of the devices that actually use those interfaces. SATA II is another example, I don't think hard drives had even taken full advantage of EIDE when SATA came out, and now SATA II comes out before drives even take advantage of SATA 150. By the time graphics cards start to take advantage of PCI-E, which will probably be either the next gen or the gen after that, PCI-E Gen2 will be almost ready.

BTW, the DFI Lanparty NF4 boards have 8 SATA ports, and they do have 7.1 audio.

Damn, now just find me a case that can house 10+ drives. :D

In regards to SATA - drives didn't remotely approach even ATA100 speeds when SATA first came out. However, SATA did introduce some neat things like much thinner cabling (thanks to serial, which is simpler than parallel) and hot swapping (which does work, though we don't have external SATA ports yet. And we are seeing the benefits of SATA IO (SATA II), since drives that support NCQ get a performance boost out of them.
 
im mainly looking for firewire.... but i dont have a pci slot :mad:

i guess i could use the adapter
