PCI-E question

When do you guys think PCI-E will go full mainstream? 6 months? 1 year? Also, when will the BTX format go into effect? This is effecting my decision on whether i get an agp card or a PCI-E card

It'll probably be a while before we see nothing but PCI-E mobos. Chances are AGP mobos will be around for two more GPU cycles, maybe more, maybe less.

I wouldn't hold off on PCI-E.

I haven't heard anything on BTX in the longest time.

Well this is for myself, but for my friend mostly :). He wants a new comp and doesnt upgrade until his stuff is useless, so he wants everything that will last him 3-4 years. (his p3 600 mhz was doin the job until this year) When should i recommend to him to grab a PCI-E mobo/graphics card?

watch the boards and the reviews and id say buy one after theyve been out for about 4 months or so. that way all the bugs and quirks will be fixed and smoothed out.

What does he do with his system? Does he want to play HL2/Doom3/etc?

Well I think the only PCI-e cards that you can get a hold of are the X600XT and 5750 (or something like that). Needless to say they aren't all that great and it would suck to buy one of those then turn around and buy a better one when they become more available. Plus the only PCI-e boards available now are Intel. If you want to run an AMD then you will have to wait a few more months (speculating).

Personally im going to build a pci-express pc that can play hl2, im going to be going to college and such (i do tons of multitasking and game development). Im going to be making a pc that gets good benchmarks with hl2 since thats what im going to be playing for the next 4-5 years, and this allows it to be by far upgradable, and it's supprisingly withen $50 to the AGP version of my parts..

5750 isn't that bad the evga one i bought off newegg came with battlefield 1942 and i get 99 fps with everything on max..... geez i wish someone on this campus would share doom 3 with me.... i'm too poor to buy it since i just preordered Everquest 2.
