I plan to buy a PCI-e Vid. card when they mobos become available for A64s. I was wondering what would be the cheapest I oculd go and still get a quality card for CS:S, Far Cry and Paikiller. I really dont wana spend more than 200 and would like ot spend less. :( minium wage sucks.
 
x700 or x700pro, hell a 6600 or 6600gt either, they're all just such good cards, you could run HL2 pretty well on any of them. However, on Farcy I'd suggest either an X700pro or 6600gt so those will probably be your two choices. Look up reviews and see what you'd rather have, I think [H] has a good one up.

I think the X800 is pci-e as well and it's a great card choice too if you want to kick in another 50 or so for it.

arent x800s in the 400-500 range? I was lookign on newegg...

And does a card being 128md or 256 md make a difference

And what is with the DDR and DDR3 on vid cards whats the diff?

The non-pro x800?

I thought it was supposed to be in the 250 range?

DDR 3 is a newer type of memory that can clock higher than 1GHz where as the DDR 1 is below 900mhz. The 6800GT is a good PCI-E high-end card in the 400 price range. The 6600GT is a good performer with DDR 3 memory and PCI-E.

Surely you're not going to tell him to get an x800 se LOL
 
I've got a X700Pro and I must say it runs Half-Life 2 and all my games with the exception of Doom 3 really well. It's a great gaming experience. However at 1600x1200 or when you crank the AA and AF at 1280x1024 or higher the cards show their limitations compared to their big brothers. Which is why I've got a 6800GT on order. I am thinking about paying the difference for the Ultra, but we will see.

But the X700Pro is a great card. All X700Pro's are 256MB GDDR3 and the 6600GT can be had in 128MB and 256MB flavors. Although as I understand it the 256MB version is hard to come by, and the memory doesn't make that much of a difference. Although it can be argued that Doom 3 and Farcry use it. Possibly HL2.

As far as GDDR3 vs. DDR it's simple. GDDR3 is faster and produces less heat and needs less voltage to operate. The disadvantage to GDDR3 is that it's more expensive and harder to produce. DDR is still often used in budget cards and low end parts.
 
Yeah newegg doesnt have any x800s just the pro version.

Yeah I think the x700pro is goan be the best bet for me unless prices fall like a rock before those new mobos hit the shelf.

If your on a tight budget PCI-E isn't the way to go btw. You can get much better performance out of the same amout of money if you stick with AGP.

This is true, pcie is not necessary and provides 0 performance boost yet but of course if later you want to upgrade quickly and cheaply you can spend more now for pcie and have that option later. Depends on when you want to spend the extra money I suppose.

Possibly, but one of the advantages of geting a PCI-E board right now is that the 6600gt PCI-E is only $170, and the AGP is $220. It's the same card, but only the PCI-e is available enough to be sold at the base price. Like you said, it's a great deal even at over 200.

I wouldn't say that... I'd rather have a 9800pro if you can only get it for over 9800 pro price.

Why? http://www.anandtech.com/video/showdoc.aspx?i=2277&p=3 There it is beating up on a 9800 pro. And last I saw at best buy the 9800 pros are still at 250. The 6600GT is 170. Pay more for less performance? LOL Even if they were identically priced, you're still better off getting the 6600 for a few bucks more if you're into value over price.

First off- no one buys junk at bestbuy unless that's the only place they can get it and if you do buy at bestbuy, you're getting ripped off quite horribly.

Second you can get a 9800 pro for ~$160 at newegg (very reliable site) for that matter, it was a sale a little while back and it had a really nice HSF on it as well (non-sale I think it's about $170). What I meant by "9800 pro price" is over $200 which is what expensive 9800 pros cost.

Edit: and of course I meant price vs performance but yes price/performance the 6600gt is a better card overall.

My friend who got his BBATI 9600XT there two weeks ago for $69 after rebate must be a total idiot eh?. Thats actually the best price I've ever seen on that card. I've also gotten 2 segate 160's for 70 dollars, 2 80gb seagates for 45 and 2 wd 120's for 50 there, and much more good stuff on rebate. Sure they sell the 9800 pro for 250 still but only someone really uninformed would buy that at that price. They do have some good deals on good products at some times, you'd be foolish to pass up the items I just mentioned at those prices, and there's no shipping othern than the gas you use driving there.

Whoa dude assumption 101- I meant on the norm their prices are horrible compared to say newegg.com or even Fry's. Their rebate sales are great but so are all the other sales anywere.

All places have a normal markup and theirs is probably 20% more than most because of their name. You can get stuff for free shipping as well, those are good sales.

I plan to go PCI-e and s939 for upgrade purposes. I will get a 3000+ and hopefully that will last me awhile overclocked.

So 6600GT beats x700pro??

I saw the x700pros goign for about 220, so I want bang for the buk thanks guys.
 
Yeah, the 6600GT beats the x700 Pro. I wish performance was a little closer because i'd like to use the component HDTV out on the x700 Pro. Then I see benchmarks like this that make me sad:

I'll probably take back my x700 Pro. It was a good deal for $160AR + tax ($20 off $200 @ bestbuy.com and $20MIR from the HL2 box), but the 6600GT is just a better card.

Component out is still analog. Its image quality would be crap compared to a TV with a DVI input.

Actually you assumed that anyone who shopps there is going to get ripped off... which is obviously not the case as you even said their rebate sales are great. You weren't specific to say that their normal prices were what you were talking about as opposed to speaking of their rebates. You need to be more specific.
 
Anywhere the prices are good during real sales, I was as specific as necessary if you can think without assuming things.

Actualy its a pretty definitive statement with no room for flexibility. You say that no one buys junk at best buy unless thats the only place they can get it. Nowhere do you say anything about sales being the exception to your absolute statement.

And that is absolutely worthless unless I have a DVI input on my HDTV. And BTW, component out to 1080i looks great. :rolleyes:
