I remember back during the Nvidia 6800GT days there were lots of tests that showed that the performance difference between 8x and 16x were very negligible and sometimes in favor of 8x which I'll chalk up as testing variance.

My question is now that technology has progressed and we have 2560x1600 resolution, multiple levels of AA and AF among other eye candy tweaks, has the performance gap between 8x and 16x on the same card increased?

My main reason for asking this is because I just received a server that comes with a PCI-E 8x slot and was wondering (space permitting) if an ATI 5870 would be bottlenecked by it.

going form 8x to 16x is a sliver of a boost. If you had a couple 8x 8x in sli or 16x8x, you wouldn't notice any boost at all with 16x 16x since it's not 100% scaled performance of each card in the first place.

Even if those cards were x2 cards? Or do they use the bridges more nowadays?

Nothing helpful to add, just wanted to say nice bikes, I got me a ninja 650r :D

i'm running x16 and x4..and at my resolution 1680x1050, there is no performance loss. and that's with 2 factory overclocked GTX 275's @ 670Mhz core!

x4 bandwith does impact a cards performance. I would like to see someone with the same setup compare numbers.

nice to know that it wasn't just me...if a HD5870 is getting 95% of the perfomance..the GTX275 must be damn close or exactly 100%

x16 is basically double the bandwidth of x8. so depend on how much data is pass between pci-e to motherboard.
