PCI-E 1x video cards?

Yeah, you dremel out the end of the PCI-E 1x slot so that you can fit a full-length PCI-E video card in it. It will still function normally, just with reduced data bandwidth (which is primarily a gaming resource anyways).

This should work. I have a mobo that has an open ended 1x slot and it does work for video. But I have never tried anything intensive on it.
 
I'd be worried about power delivery if you cut down a 1x slow to fit a 16x slot. 1/16 the power?

Well you really should put in a video card that would max the slot when you are doing this. Pretty much only the low end. Although I'm not sure if you would burn it out it if it tried to draw too much or if it would just be unstable.

And yet the power ratings from one slot to another vary:

1x: 10w startup power, 25w after startup
4x-16x: 25w startup power (16x can go 75W after startup)

I've never been able to figure out why - if the power connector is the same for every card, why change the power figures for a given slot? The extra ground returns on the larger slots make absolutely no difference because video cards will function fine if you force them into 8x or 4x mode (by taping over the contacts).
 
If I had to guess I'd say that those are the minimum requirements to meet the specification. The actual power delivered to the slot probably varies board to board, with some doing just the minimum and others going up to the full 75w. The OP can probably find a cheap low power card that won't use more than the minimum 25w though.
 
you've used a 16x card in it?

Yes, it is an a8n-e and I put my nvidia 210 in the open ended slot to try it out and it worked fine for internet and standard desktop stuff but I only had in that slot for a couple days to try it out so I don't know if there are any long term issues.
