Edit: Misread what you meant. You should be fine using a 1x card in an 8x slot.


If you're talking about plugging an 8x card into a 1x slot:
You could carefully dremel out the back of the 1x slot so you can plug in the 8x card into it.
But that would only be physically changing the socket, not electrically, so you'd still be stuck with 1x bandwidth.
