PCI BUS question

My motherboard (see sig) allows changing the PCI bus from 66 to 99. I know the default it 66 mhz and that this has to do with the limitations of overclocking memory too much and staying 1:1 etc...

But, can someone please explain what changing the pci bus from 66 up to a higher number will do (any dmg?) to my 9800pro or if it is of any benefit at all in my situation.

PCI is 33MHz, not 66. Maybe you're thinking of AGP bus? Anyway, if everything in your system can support it, it will give you a small performance boost. But most current hardware can't support fluctuations in bus speed. Hard drives for instance will usually lose data at above a 38MHz PCI, and current video cards are rarely stable if the AGP bus is even 1-2 MHz away from 66.
But if you can speed up the bus without losing stability, then it's not a bad idea at all.

I would NEVER change the PCI/AGP bus speed. There is little to no performance increase by doing this and you run a real risk of damaging your hardware beyond repair. That's why most everyone who overclocks locks the bus @ 66 mhz.

You may want to read up on the threads where people have killed their soundcardsand/or other devices by upping this number.

Like the above posters say, it's a bad idea to mess with your PCI bus. Keep things locked down and you won't damage stuff on your PCI bus and (in most situations) you'll be able to overclock higher.
