Im building a new system and will be buying a PCI 2.0 video card (prob 8800 GTS) but am unsure which motherboards support this new format. I know that the higher end 250-300 motherboards do but thats a bit more than what I'd like to spend. Any idea what a good more value-priced board is that's PCI-2.0 compliant? Thanks.

Any board will support that card - PCIe 2.0 cards are backwards compatible to PCIe 1.0 slots. The only native 2.0 chipsets, on the Intel side, are X38 or X48, and are probably not worth the extra money just for the 2.0 support.

Will there be any performance difference in having a PCI 2.0 mobo running a PCI 2.0 Videocard at this juncture or are they simply preparing users for the next standard? If not, then i will save myself about $175 on a motherboard that is not PCI 2.0 running a PCI 2.0 videocard. Thanks.

no, they are just preparing users for the next standard. By the time we have graphics cards that are fast enough to take advantage of the PCIe 2.0 bus, you will be needing a new CPU and that means a new motherboard too. Just go for an intel P35 motherboard.

True. But PCI-Express 2.0 compatible cards like the 8800GT and 8800GTS (G92) are still faster than non PCI-Express 2.0 cards. Same goes for the ATI cards.

This is NOT due to PCI-Express 2.0 however, but because of increased memory bandwidth, faster and better cores, and several other factors. They just happen to support PCI-Express 2.0 as one its features.

They are faster because they are newer, there is no difference between using them in a PCIe 1.0 and 2.0 slots, with the possible exception of the 3870X2.
