Thought I would share this with you at [H].
About 6 months ago I bought an Astro Mixamp 5.8 along with the Sennheiser PC360 so I could game on my console with headphones. Using an optical switch I also hooked up my mac mini optical output to the mixamp so I can listen to computer audio with the headphones too. The optical pass-through on the mixamp base goes to my receiver hooked up to Klipsch 5.1 Ultra setup for non-headphone listening/gaming.
I liked the setup a lot quality-wise but not the cabling. Having 9 feet of cable between the mixamp receiver and the headphones was unnecessary, annoying, and literally a tripping hazard if I walked around.
I cut the cable on my PC360 and installed a TRRS jack. I then bought a short 3-ft TRRS cable and now I can enjoy a mixamp with a short cable! Since everything's jacked I can swap out the TRRS cable for different lengths if I ever need a longer length of cable.
With the remainder of the stock PC360 cable, I put a TRRS plug on the loose end of the cable, and I use that to hook up directly to my Xonar U3 when using the headphones on my PC. You can see this cable and my U3 on the right of the pic. Having 9 feet of cable there is nice since I can walk around a little with the headphones on. I actually have an extra port on my optical switch that I can use to connect the PC audio through the mixamp as well- using the DDLive feature of my U3 to feed DD5.1 audio to the mixamp also- but there really is no point in me connecting it up like this. I don't need apartment-wide range for PC audio since the only time I am using my PC is when I am gaming, i.e. sitting right at the desk. The cable is just fine for PC use and the U3 has DH functionality already built in.
The only funny side-effect is that while I can use the headphones to listen to my ipod touch just fine, but the mic doesn't work. So far as I can tell, this is because the iPod uses a non-standard pinout on its TRRS jack. I'm not sure if it worked correctly with the stock cabling setup though- I never did test it (would be interested to know if a PC360 owner out there can check for this).
Been using it like this for a few months now with no problems.
Anyhow, a simple mod. Well, simple in concept at least- rather tricky in execution as soldering the very thin and enameled wires in the PC360 cable to the leads on the TRRS jacks was hard. I would have considered installing the jack internally on the headphones but could not figure out how to disassemble the PC360 without breaking stuff. Anyway in the end everything went together fine and now I enjoy the setup a lot more now that I don't have to deal with the overabundance of cabling.
