Hi!

I'm currently running with the following specs:

Mobo: ASUS P5Q Pro
CPU: Intel Core 2 Quad Q9450
RAM: OCZ Reaper Hpc Edition PC2-8500 DDR2 4GB 2X2GB DDR2-1066 CL5-5-5-15
GPU: Gigabyte Radeon HD 4870

I'm looking to do a minor upgrade of my RAM, I'd add another 2x2GB of memory for a grand total of 8GB.

Availability for this type of RAM has now become scarce, but it's fine by me, I just need your advice for which is the best bang for the buck. Also, the sticks musn't have any overhead (like heatpipes, as I have on my sticks now) as they need to clear with my HD4870.

My options:

  • G.SKILL F2-8500CL5D-4GBPK PC2-8500 4GB 2X2GB DDR2-1066 CL5-5-5-15 240PIN for $75.42
  • Kingston HyperX Genesis 4 GB : 2 x 2 GB - DIMM 240-pin - DDR2 - 1066 MHz / PC2-8500 - CL5 - 2.2 V - unbuffered - non-ECC for $113.97
  • Crucial - Memory - 2 GB - DIMM 240-pin - DDR2 - 1066 MHz / PC2-8500 - CL7 - 1.8 V - unbuffered - non-ECC for $49.99

All prices canadian. If possible, I'd like to stay below 100$.

Thanks for your help!

Why not try and find some used RAM of the same type you already have? I am looking for RAM to make the same type of upgrade you are wanting to as well. For me it's not really a pressing matter because not even BF3 uses up all 4GB I already have.

For me it has become a pressing matter, because I run many applications simultaneously! Moreover, I can't get the same type of RAM for the heatpipe reason I mentioned! :) I just wanted to know if any of the RAM I listed would do the job.

Thank you!

I would get the G.Skill. The Corsiar may be cheaper but has much looser timings than what you have already.

Thank you! I will go with the G.skill and see with that. Worst case scenario I'll swap my old sticks for a 2nd pair of G.skill!

The G.Skill stuff is great stuff. I still have a rig running 4 of those sticks. Of course they were almost half the price they are now when I got them a couple years ago.

In 2008/2009 ddr2 prices were cheaper than they are now. By now production has either ended or has seriously cut back since current systems do not support ddr2.

Great thread! Speaks true to anyone looking to upgrade RAM, but doesn't want to make the switch to DDR3.

I'm seriously considering getting 4 sticks of the G.Skill for 8 gigs, as well. My only question is since it's DDR2, and not DDR3, wouldn't it still be faster than a good number of the DDR3 RAM? Doesn't the "3" mean that the timings or something have to be a lot faster in DDR3 to beat out lower timings in DDR2, because of the "2." I could never figure out the calculation and I hope someone knows what I'm talking about, but it's about how to calculate the speed of the RAM in DDR2 vs. DDR3.

DDR3 is not compatible at all with DDR2 and requires a different slot. You need to get whatever your motherboard supports. Some have 2 DDR3 slots and 4 DDR2 slots or 2 and 2.

. My only question is since it's DDR2, and not DDR3, wouldn't it still be faster than a good number of the DDR3 RAM?

No it would not be faster than current DDR3. DDR2 1066 would be faster than DDR3 1066 but that is about it and DDR3 1066 for desktops is not really is not being mass produced anymore.
