well i finally got firefox xft2 ready and damn does it look great, 2 seconds on the shack and X crashes and i can't start her up again. For some reason i decide to reboot and now my pc won't post. The hdd's spin when they're plugged in, so cpu okay? Tried a different video card and then it posted but didn't detect the hdds (when i had them plugged in), checked the cables restarted and again no post.

Upon further inspection the computer seems to post randomly, when nothing is hooked up to the system or when something is. It posted 3 times in a row but i never had the hdds hooked up.

This is a p4 system, p4c800e-delux (asus board) with corsair memory. No beeps, nothing. What could it be? Bad psu? memory? Thanks in advance.

Usually if it can't find the hard drives its because they are both set to master, etc, but it sounds like your comp worked before so you obviously had them hooked up alright.

Sounds like CPU is fine, if CPU was damaged HD's wouldn't spin at all, and fans wouldn't be powered... I'm guessing it might be a problem with cables... but I really don't know. Maybe the vid card?

i tried a different vid card and it posted but then when i hooked everything back up it didn't post. I'd hoping it be the video card so i can buy a new 9800pro. Thanks for the reply.

ALso would the pc still boot if the video card isn't working?

As long as the AGP slot is filled, I think the comp would be able to boot. No real experience seeing as how I've never broken a vid card :(. But from what you say, it's definitley the video card.

i tried a different video card again and it wouldn't post. I've called asus and see what they say, i googled for a bit and didn't find anything useful and asus download site must be down. What gets me is that its randomly posting. Hasn't done it lately though.

This is a long shot but, try updating your BIOS (if it's not exactly up to date).

acctually most mobo's *will* power on with damaged cpu or no cpu at all for that matter. The problem you're having sounds very similar to when my water pump power inverter fried...the proc wasn't burning, there was just enough cooling to keep it from frying but still allow it to post some times...i was trouble shooting it for hours because it gave random beep errors (usually mem error beep code) and sometimes none at all, then i started smelling smoke from the inverter and noticed an air bubble in the hose that wasn't moving.

Yes, all motherboards will power on even without a CPU, but fans and HD wont spin.

The indication that the mobo is on is usually a green LED on.. but anyways this is off topic.

that logic makes no sence since fans are not controlled by the motherboard...if the mobo has power then the fans plugged into it will spin up...if the fan is plugged directly into a molex power connector they will come on as soon as the psu is activated by the mobo same goes for the hard drives, the mobo doesn't control them spinning up
also, this isn't off topic since it could have been the cpu since hd's spinning up is not an indication of a good cpu as was stated earlier

well after messing with this all night i think i've found the problem, vid card. Although i would like to test out my gf4 again just to make sure. Got my old gf2 in here now. No dual monitors for me :( Thanks for all the help guys.
