Initially my problem was that after installing a tape drive, the computer wouldn't boot. The CPU fan would spin for 1/2 second and then quit. The power supply was extremely hot so I purchased a new power supply and that fixed the problem temporalily. The computer went back to not booting with the CPU fan spinning for 1/2 second and that was it. I figured the motherboard was fried.

Q:1 Fast forward to today. I found a brand new motherboard of the exact kind to replace it.
Even though I am swapping motherboards with the same replacement, will Windows XP Pro have a problem?

Q:2 After I swapped motherboards, the CPU fan starts up and stays running and everything powers up but the computer will not POST. Nothing shows up. The old motherboard was running a 1.9 Pentium 4 but it would only support that with a BIOS update. The spec says it will only support a 1.8 without the update. The new motherboard according to the spec will only support a max of 1.8 without the BIOS update. Is the problem I am having now typical of a unsupported CPU in a motherboard?
 
Well...I hate to sound like a smartass, but what kind of power supply did you buy to replace the old one?

it does sound like a bios update would help. if you have a slower chip, try booting with that. other than that... I guess you could take the bios chip out of the old mobo and put it into the new, but that's tricky/dangerous. yick.
 
This all started when u installed the tape drive??
Try taking it out and see what happens.
 
The only thing connected at one point was the video card, memory, and CPU.
I tried to force beep codes by starting up taking out 1 of those at a time.
I finally ending up trying to boot with no video card, memory, or the CPU and I got the same results.
 
Is the motherboard old/cheap enough that it has FSB adjustment jumpers? May want to look into that. I have had trouble with cheap MBs that use jumpers to set the FSB having an incorrect setting for my chip causing this sort of issue.
