Hey guys...I am out of ideas on this shit.

My rig:

e8400 stock, with either AC7 Pro, or S1823 HSF...I've reseated it several times with both
ASUS P5K-SE
8800 Ultra\4850x2 tried both...same issue
8gb g.skill ddr2-800mhz ram, tried all sticks in all slots.
BFG Tech 800w PSU

Baisically, the computer turns on...all fans spin, it stays on for 5 seconds...no error beeps, nothing...then it turns off, 3 seconds later it turns on and stays on. I've fucked with the jumpers, reset the cmos, took the cmos battery in/out and reseated my CPU a few times.

I have taken the mobo out of the case, and had it on a plastic mat...same exact issue occured. I also did it with and without ram, it made no difference.

This can only leave a few things at fault....the mobo, which worked when I first took it out of the case, the proc...which also worked when it was taken out, or the PSU....which worked as well.

My only issue with the proc is a tiny smer of NON-conductive thermal paste at the base of the chip, where the sliver ends and hits the green chip part.


I did add more case fans, and a fan controller...could I be overloading the PSU or something?
 
You shouldn't be overloading the power supply with your setup, but how old is it? Which model is it?

Have you tried cleaning the TIM off the processor? (I don't know whether or not that alone would do it... but at this point, you might as well try everything you can think of.)

This may sound like a stupid question, but are all of the motherboard standoffs in their proper positions inside the case? Do you have any "stray" standoffs in the case?
 
Each time I reseated the proc...I used my artic clean to remove the compound, and then reapplied it.

Mobo stand offs seem fine, I picked the case up and shook it...nothing is rolling around, besides...I already took it out of the case. :-(

I'm totally stumped at this point. Could I not be mounting the HSF properly? Would bad contact cause the proc to overheat and do this?


The rig was built in May of 08. The exact model of the PSU is...BFG TECH, BFGR800WPSU 800W Power Supply, 24-pin ATX12V EPS12V, Quad +12V, Retail
 
Also...the only thing I have connected to the mobo power wise..is the 24pin PSU connector. Should I have anything else in? I only had that, the front panel case stuff, switch, speaker etc...cpu fan, 3 sata cables. Am I missing anything?
 
You should also have a 4- or 8-pin CPU power connector plugged into the motherboard. (The location for this connector is usually near the CPU socket. Check out the pictures from this page to see what I mean.)

Your power supply comes with a 12V CPU power connector.
 
Fuck, I think that is the problem. I've got a 4pin power connector zip tied like 30 times to the back of my case.

I'll give it a try tomorrow, thanks a lot!

Got any suggestions for something to cut zip ties easily, aside from pliers\scissors?
 
I remember before I sent my gigabyte UD3R mobo to be RMA'd that I plugged in the 8pin ATX power connector, and I got a really long beep and no post.
 
Based on the pictures that I found for your power supply, the 8-pin ATX connector is actually a 4+4-pin connector. The problem is that you may have to figure out which 4-pin connector is the main one.

As for cutting zip ties, be really careful. Considering how many people like to get them really tight, I don't have any better advice for you.
 
Well, I got the 4 pin ATX power connector free...and it stayed on, beeped 2 or 3 times, and yeah. whatever..that was the problem.

NEW problem is, when I got the zip tie off, I cut a wire on my 8pin ATX power cord, which I will need when I get my UD3R back....do you think I can just get a 4pin to 8pin adapter and use the 4 pin connector? :-((((
 
I found a 8pin connector with 2 3 pin molex connectors with black\yellow wires...will that work as an 8pin ATX power connector for the mobo?!!
