So.....

I swapped out heastinks earlier today, and this required removing the motherboard and then putting everything back together.

When it comes time to power on the system with the new heatsink, it starts up for 5 seconds, turns off, then starts up again. I can hear the hard drives working, but nothing else happens. There are no beeps or post codes.

Also, I removed ALL memory to see if it would at least beep when all the memory was gone and it still didn't.

Any ideas?!?

check all your connections, make sure everything is properly seated. if, for example, your video card is not fully in the slot that will do it for sure.

Yeah, I made sure it was seated and everything. The fans on the video card spin up and the lights power on when I turn on the power, so its not that.

Well, guess it gives me an excuse to get an X58 system now!

lol if you're happy with that, do what i'm doing with my fried s939 system - salvage whats still usable and sell the parts here on the forums. most of my good stuff went in the space of 3 days!

Yeah, that's what I'm going to do.

I placed an order at newegg for an i7-920, an asus p6t-deluxe-v2 and 12GB of OCZ Ram.

I'm going to send the CPU back to Intel to see if they'll replace it, as I think that's what the issue is. So, looks like I may be selling a new Q9450 soon along with 8GB of RAM.

Sounds like someone just needed an excuse for new toys.

"Whoops, silly me..."

Check to make sure your front I/O connections are right. Sometimes it's easy to accidentally flip the +/- for the power/reset switches.

I really doubt the CPU is the problem. Try resetting the BIOS and see if that will help. If not, try removing all your components from the case and running the system on a table to see if it'll post there. Usually when these sorts of things happen, it's an issue with how the PC was put together.

I'll try taking it out of the case tonight and see what goes from there.

At this point I'm just trying to get any sort of beep or error codes and I am getting nothing.

It will start up for a few seconds, then restart. That's all.

Clear the CMOS.

Recheck and reseat all connections.

Can you boot the setup outside of the case? I've had the case short out connections before due to a bad riser, I/O panel, etc.

Redo the cpu, heatsink, ram, video. Unplug everything else. Leave CMOS battery out for a few minutes. Check 24+8 or anything else needed for power. See what happens when you force the psu on, short green wire to any black.

Definitely not this. All that is done to do the ACPI ATX power on thing is shorting + to -. The switch for this is a momentary short of those. You can't put it in backwards.

I second this. After opening my case the other day to check the serial number of my optical drive I must have bumped my VGA some how. Once I replugged everything in it wouldn't post. Took the GPU out and reseated...still nothing. So I finally unplugged everything from the Mobo except the cpu, cleared the CMOS using the jumper and ended up taking out the battery for a couple minutes. Powered on the Mobo to finally get the audible beeps (of course it yelled at me for not having any memory in it). Plugged everything back in (RAM, SATA cables, VGA, etc) and its back up. Good luck, its definitely worth a shot.

Agreed

I'd suspect a grounding issue...loose screw in the case touching motherboard circuitry..insulator on a screw point on the board damaged..something like that

To check for a PSU you could also frankenstein a PSU over to it - take a working box, and your box, and run the ATX power cable from the working box to the faulty one. Unplug devices in the working box. Hit power switch on the bad box and see if it juices up. Saves you pulling the PSU and cables all the way out of the working PC.

Ok, well I just too it out of the case and assembled it on the table and it's still a no go. It'll power on for around 5-10 seconds, then it'll restart and stay "on" without anything really happening.

Yeah I do, I tried that as well and it's still a no go. Plus I also forced powered on my current PSU and it turned on.
