Anyone know how i can figure how many watts my computer/s are using? I am in the market for a UPS but dont know how big of one i need. So if anyone wouldn't mind helping me out or atleast point me in the right direction i would greatly appreciate it.

This is what i would like to have powered:
Main Rig:
P4 2.8E
1GB ram 2x 512 sticks
Asus P4C800-E deluxe
ATi 9800 pro
Sound Blaster
37GB 10k raptor
19in monitor i know it uses 100 watts So dont include this into your figures.

Mail server:
300mhz
64mb ram 1 stick
Everything is onboard (nic, video etc)
20GB hdd

Server1:
1.0ghz
512mb Ram
1x 40 GB hdd
1x 80 GB hdd

Server2:
233mhz
96mb ram
1x 4.3gb hdd
Nic
2mb video card

Networking stuff:
1x D-link router
1x 16 port swtich.

If i have to i can take off my monitor and my main rig. Only problem with that is i have no way to SSH into the other machines ( they dont even have monitors). We do not lose power that much so all i need the UPS for is for power flickers. Any information on anything would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
 
The problem with that is i would have
400+235+300+300+100(monitor)=1325 watts? There is no way in hell that these machines use that much electricity. Plus our power bill would show that running 24/7.
 
Computers never draw the full power that the power supplies are rated for, so that will put you way off if you go by that. You could get an ammeter and hook it up to each of the computers to see how much current they draw. Four computers is quite a bit for a single home UPS, so you might want to look into either getting multiple UPSes or a professional or enterprise level UPS.

Maybe Ill just get a smaller UPS to power the rigs i really needed powered. Such as mail server and apache+sql server + network. Shrug. I am going to borrow an amp meter and check the machines for the heck of it.
 
theres links to stuff that estimates your power consumption... you list what you have and how many of each parts and then you sum it up and they tell you how much watts your computer consumes...

Those estimaters are bullshit and will likely get you nowhere close to your actual power consumption. Not to mention they base the estimations on what the devices draw, so it doesn't take into account power supply inefficiencies, which is certainly important in this guy's case.

That's a good idea of what your high end machine needs.
I'd be hard pressed to believe all the rest combined need more than 150W (200 if they're under load).

i'd say with the monitor, 550W would be enough. Even if it's only ratted for a few minutes at that power draw, it'll give you time to shut things down.

This is a calculator that does the math for you based on the amperage ratings of each device on each rail. It's is far from bullshit, as it just does the math on the numbers your provide, giving a theoretical maximum draw for your computer. Then, if you look up the efficiency rating on your PSUs (between 60% and 70%, usually), then you can do the math to figure out how much they *could* draw from the AC side, which is what is important to you.

That's the best one I've seen so far since it has actual devices rather than just agp video card and ide hard drive and stuff.
