At this time I'm running a P4 1.4ghz, w/512mb sdram, which is unfair for the 9600 pro.

Basically what I want to do is get full potential out of my 9600 pro, without overkilling (system vs video card).

What do you guys think?

INFO

CPU
-Intel or AMD for me is no war, I like them both.

Mobo
-Debating to go with a RAID setup....most likely not because of the amount of extra money (raid optioned mobo$, 2X HD$)

Ram
-probably just 512 for now, get another stick later on to make the gig

Use
-School, gaming, surfing the net.

Budget
-I am not on a "tight" budget, but I dont want to spend that extra bit of money for just a little more performance type of a budget.

Thanks,
Foz

P4 2.6c or 2.8c
Abit IS7 (IC7-max3 if you want to spend more money)
1 GB your choice PC3500 (PC3200 if you want to save a little money). Recommended brands are Corsair XMS, Kingston HyperX, Geil Golden Dragon, Mushkin Level II, etc, etc. Crucial if you won't be overclocking a lot.

Don't go with a RAID setup, you'll never need it for school, internet, and light gaming. In fact, your current proc would be *ok* for gaming, though obviously nothing special.

yah it is "ok" but your exactly right, nothing special

also what exactly is the "c" , im looking at where i get most parts, and they have...

Intel Pentium IV 2.8GHz 533FSB (512K) RETAIL
Intel Pentium IV 2.8E 800FSB (1MB) RETAIL

obviously the 800mhzFSB is better as well as the cache, is that the "c" model?

then only 2.6 they offer is stated as this

Intel Pentium IV 2.6GHz 800FSB (512K) RETAIL

I highly suggest a 2.6C and IS7 or AI7 with BH-5 ram if you can find it. If not, get some PC4000. It seems like the 2.6s hit the 250FSB mark easier than 2.8s so the nice RAM would be of better use with the 2.6. I can't even break 233FSB with my 2.8 (but I'm on stock cooling), so I'm not even stressing my RAM at all.

Barton MOBILE 2500+
any nForce2 board that supports dual channel
2x512 Mushkin pc3200 lvl II

well, not exactly...the first proc you list is a "b" (533 fsb, 512k cache) and the second is an "e" (800FSB, 1MB cache). What you want is the "c" (800FSB, 512k cache), because the "E"s are expensive and look like they might have overclocking issues.

2.6c, retail

so is the c actaully better than the e even though it has half the cache?

as of right now the C is better than the E. E is the new prescott processor. its still in its early stage and it has alot of bugs that need to be worked out. but the prescott should be a much better processor once it switches over to the LGA.

Athlon XP 2500+ (overclocked to 3200+)
Abit NF7-S or Asus A7N8X Motherboard
512MB RAM

All that for only $275, that's what you wanna get.

I say a MOBILE 2500+ or 2400+ processor, an abit NF7-S and 512 or a gig of ram.

The mobile (laptop) processors work fine in desktop motherboards, and are unlocked so they overclock much better. Also, don't just expect to overclock to a certain speed. You can't expect to have a "2500+ running at 3200+ speeds", some chips just won't do it. Chances are it will, but don't depend on it or anything.

Another good bet is a 2.4, 2.6 or 2.8 ghZ "C" processor (avoid the E for now, they aren't great at this point) with an IS7 or IC7 motherboard, and 512 or a gig of ram. Personally, I like a gig of RAM for battlefield 1942, but it depends on how you use the computer.

mobile athlon 2500+
dfi infinity
pc3700 kingston hyperx (if its still $115 at newegg)

I'm voting for an AMD mobile 2500+ or 2400+
You can pair that up with either a DFI Infinity NF2 board or an Abit NF7-S V2.0 and have everything you need for a kickass system.

If you can afford 1GB of RAM vs just 512, (and don't plan on going any higher than DDR400 memory speed) go for whatever is a decent value at at least DDR400 speeds. If you plan to go above DDR400, get the good stuff, like Mushkin or Corsair.

i hear of people hitting 270 fsb with a mobile 2500+. i really doubt a generic stick of pc3200 will be able to run at speeds that high.

there are sticks of 512mb mushkin lvl1 pc4000 ram at newegg.com for $120! well they were there yesterday, not sure about today.

A Barton mobile 2500+ with a good NF2 mb or 2.6c with a IC7mb.
