Hello, I got a c2d 8500, gigabyte GA-EP45-UD3P motherboard, and rosewill 550 watt psu. I've disconnected everything and have the processor and motherboard getting power from the psu. Everytime I turn on my pc it turns off after a couple seconds and then turns back on and then off and it continues to do the same for a while. I've tried it with a different/less powerful psu and it still turned off and on. When i remove the processor it doesn't turn off, so could it be that my processor died?
 
First, why have you disconnected everything but the motherboard and CPU? Because it was turning on and off like that before you disconnected everything? Do you still have a video card on the motherboard, and is it connected to a monitor?

Second, Rosewill PSUs are crap and that is the first suspect. Get a better PSU, like a Corsair VX550.
 
It was happening with all the components on the pc and then I began to remove parts trying to figure out which one was the culprit, So now I'm down to the processor and motherboard. I suspect that the rosewill psu is the problem because the exact same thing happened to my amd pc and i ended up getting this intel pc. But, when it happened to my amd pc, i bought a corsair psu and the pc still turned off and on. I went to Compusa to buy a processor but they charge a 50% restocking fee for returned processors. I guess I'll get a better psu from Compusa and see if it fixes my problem.

Is there a case speaker plugged in?
Do you hear error beeps without any RAM nor vidcard plugged in?
Did you try clearing your CMOS?
Have you re-seated your CPU?
 
Case speaker? It's not plugged in. Thus no error beeps, unless they come out of my pc speakers.
I cleared my CMOS several times.
I have reseated my cpu and I even used a bigger heatsink/fan from an old processor.
I think it may be my processor since my pc doesnt turn off when I remove the processor.
 
Well, it would help to hear the error beeps. If you hear them without RAM/Vidcard, plug in a single stick of RAM and see if it still loops on/off.
 
id also look to see if something is shorting out.. either the motherboard or hardware..
 
the motherboard is on standoffs correct? and not just mounted right to the case.

Just checking...
 
I connected the case speaker to the motherboard and it beeps when with the ram removed. So i added one stick and it stopped beeping.

I still have the motherboard mounted into the case.

No. He's wondering if you shorted the motherboard to the case (touching). If there's no standoff's, some cases won't have room for the MB to clear the rear panel.....thereby touching it to the MB. Viola - short....and dead MB most likely.
 
pull the board out of the case, as specified in the basic troubleshooting guide sticky. follow those steps and report back.

I bought a Corsair 550 watt psu and a gigabyte motherboard from Compusa. Connected everything and with the new psu and motherboard my pc still turns off and on, so it must be my c2d 8500.
 
was this in the case or out? on and off sounds like a short. inspect the pads of the CPU if you think its the cpu. cpus rarely go bad, but it happens.
 
Where's you sit the board when it was outside of the case and you tried powering it on?
What's the other PSU you tried?
When you did the paperclip trick on the the PSU, what happened?
