PC to Receiver over long distance

I am sure this question has been addressed...if someone can point me to the appropriate thread, it would be greatly appreciated.

I want to go from my PC to A/V Receiver. (Currently have an Audiotron with which I am must not happy). Have about 30 feet to travel. Is there a way to do this direct (with out having to have an "Audiotron" type solution in between)?

You could simply get a 30ish foot digital coax cable, if your sound card has a digital out, or run a pair of RCA stereo cables for the same length. You'll need some mini-to-RCA adapters for the second route, but those are really cheap anyway.
 
I had tried the RCA route (with mini-adapter) but there was a tone of noise with that solution. Is 30 ft too long (i.e., is that the cause of the noise)? Would it be different if I had a sound card with true RCA out?

Would the digital coax be better (I have a SB 5.1 which I believe supports digital out).

What sort of noise? If your RCA cable wasn't well shielded, it will pick up EMF from anything around it. I'd be willing to bet that the cause was poor shielding. Did you have to run the cable near any high-power devices, or lots of power cords? Those all emit lots of EMF, which might be the issue.

What sort of RCA cable do you have?

What do you not like about the audiotron? Cause there are other devices out there that may work better. I use a Squeezebox www.slimp3.com. I love it. What I did not like about the audiotron was it required windows shares /samba, did not support flac without samba hacks, and the display was not so good.
