hello

my pc shuts down unexpectedly as if I cut its power supply

which diagnostic algorithm can lead me to the cause?

thanks!

Have you gone through any of the steps in the sticky http://hardforum.com/showthread.php?t=1349426 ?

Is this occurring a few seconds into powering the system up, or a few minutes, hours, days, are you running anything in particular when the system decides to shut down?

System specs would be a help, type of hardware, PSU wattage, graphics card model, memory, how many hard drives and what type, motherboard model.

need more information than what you have provided, to figure out what might be going on.

wow that thread is massive, I will go through it at weekend

I can say that it shuts down after hours, it doesn't run anything particular and my specs are:

AMD 1090T
motherboard: http://www.gigabyte.com/products/product-page.aspx?pid=3415&dl=1
graphics card embeded to the motherboard
one 500GB hard disk SATA
750W power supply
WinXP Pro SP2 x64

So it runs fine for hours THEN shuts down? Is it totally random, or after a certain fixed amount of time, or when you game/do something intensive? Below are the likely suspects in descending order of probability:

Your PSU is crapping out under load, or one of it's connectors is crapped out, causing it to shut down/short.

Your system is overheating, and a security feature is kicking in to shut it down. Use HWMonitor and monitor the temps in your comp. Anything over 80 is bad.

Outside of that, any other error should generate at least a BSOD, some error message, a freeze, restart, or some such. For an instantaneous shut down (as if you threw a power switch) 90% of the time it means your PSU went to shit.

This is the same board I got my nephew, didn't bother with the onboard graphics, as I knew they weren't going to be up to snuff for what he wanted, and I got him a 460 (it's in the signature), I reckon the on board graphics, being part of the north bridge, is getting too hot, and shutting the system off. You might want to try out a PCI-e graphics card (if you have one to hand for testing), and see how that fairs, my nephew hasn't had any issues with his setup since I built it 6 months ago.

Can always check the event viewer as well, just to see if it recorded the problem before it shut down on you, something pointing to the north bridge, or a display driver problem...it just sounds like a heat problem.

PSU should be fine, providing it's actually putting out 750 Watts.

Waiting on a specific brand/model on that psu before I make a call on that. Also, it could just be that the PSU is broken period, no matter what Watts it's rated at.
