PC Sales See 'Longest Decline' In History

i feel the rise in mobile computing is confusing the analysts some. Yes, There is a whole class of people that really like and sort of need mobile computing. All the guys who spend alot of time away from home or the office and yet want to do minor computing tasks/games etc.

In the cities this is a huge number of people. It's smaller in the burbs - but still significant. With the advent of mobile they can get their fill. But mobile computing is still inferior for the serious home/office user. They are more powerful and less expensive and importanly they provide vastly superior ergnomics and much faster creation times..(for content creators).

Despite that though desktop is still sinking. But the REAL reason is not the rise of the mobile (which is a new untapped market - not a direct competitor) its the failure of the software guys to make desktops relevant. No major consumer software pushes users towards more powerful machines.

Sure some specialized gamers, movie makers, etc might want faster machines. But there isn't a version of say "Sarah" if you watched Eureka that really exists. (Think of a local Siri with control of your house - that is vastly more intelligent.) or anything like that to drive the use of desktop computing. That's the real issue. Most home users don't need all the CPU cycles..

Its true something like that might never exist. but if that's the case that is what will doom the desktop sales picture - not mobile technology. If you switched from a desktop to a laptop and didn't notice the limitations of small screen stuck to a medicore keyboard - you were doing something wrong. Mobile tech is useful for when you have to be mobile. It's a seperate market - and it shouldn't be crushing desktops..
