PC + Reciever = Nothing?

I've been messing around trying to hook up an older reciever to my computer so I can run my mp3's through the stereo speakers in my room but it isn't going well. I have an older dell with a creative labs sound blaster live 5.1 digital sound card but the only two times I've been able to get audio out of the computer where in the computer speaker jack and the head phones jack, the line out and digital output don't seem to be doing anything. Whats up?
 
You need to make sure that whatever you plug your soundcard's output into (i.e. the receiver's input aka source) will be selected as the receiver's source on its user interface. So if you use the digital input on the receiver, make sure the receiver knows that you are using the digital input as your source and select it accordingly. Refer to your manual because it could be a number of things:

- CD Digital
- DVD Digital 1/2/3

You know, something like that. You have to pay attention to the inscribed markings on the plug at the back of the receiver too. See if you can use that as a clue to what the source is named on the receiver's user interface.

If this doesnt work, then there might be something else wrong. But try this first atleast.
