PC Reboots contstantly

Trying to make a long story short.

I built my College housemate a PC, an Asus A7N8X with a Athlon XP Processor and a stick of Corsair XMS 512 mb ram. This was about a year ago. PC ran great until 1 day he gets mad at his roomates girlfriend, throws a full 1 gallon jug of water (closed) at his desk where his PC is. It was turned on and when the jug hit the jostle fucked up his hard drives and both failed instantly. He said he saw a spark which I assumed was the HD's. No water escaped the jug luckily. We replaced the HD's and everything seemed fine.

Fast forward to now and he brings his PC to me saying it reboots all the time on its own and he can't even get XP reinstalled.

I take a look at it, test the ram using Memtest and the like. I get his PC to not reboot only when i have the bios set the FSB to 100mhz which I think means 200 mhz. I had the same setup and to get 333mhz performance you had to have it set to 166mhz. Anyway the system runs now but at like half the speed.

Only things I can think of, is the MB has failed over time since the "incident", the processor is somehow bad, or the Power Supply has started sending out faulty voltages (which I haven't checked) which is making the system unstable at a normal FSB setting.

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Oh and the power supply is a Thermaltake 420W.

I would probably start with the motherboard, i don't know how you would start troubleshooting other than replacing pieces in the computer.

Sounds like you should also sign your roomie up for some anger management classes.
 
Yeah he is actually a very docile guy, we gave him the nickname of Jolly Fat Asian. He got "sexiled" alot which meant a lot of time with out WarCraft and such and one day the girlfriend made a mess in our kitchen and some other stuff and he lost it after a couple months.

Thanks for the response. I assume MB problem, couldn't see any noticeable damage like fried capacitors or anything. Wondering if Asus would take a look at it under warranty. Only the kid has no more box (UPC Code or receipt).

I am pretty sure it can't be the processor, I would imagine the PC wouldn't work at all if it was messed up.

Any other ideas.
 
Uhh.. Motherboard? no... If your getting random restarts its most likely your ram buddy..
 
Well ran the newest Memtest for hours over and over and no errors, so ummm not the RAM buddy...


Oh and these restarts aren't really "random" as they are like you turn on the PC and it restarts before Windows even has a chance to start when the FSB is set normal. Sometimes you can make it to Windows, then bam, sometimes windows Blue screens before it gets loaded all the way...When the FSB is set lower runs fine.

I ran Memtest with the FSB set in different frequencies and ran fine each time.

Whats the STOP code from the BSOD ?
Is it always the same one ?
A quick check of temps and voltages wont go amiss.

Well I am pretty sure I found the problem. It wasn't the Main Board the Ram or the processor, it was his Power Supply which his friend told him to get, a Thermaltake 420w.

I tried it with an Antec Smart Power I pulled from a case I just got a couple months back and I turned up the FSB and so far it works like a champ. I am gonna go install WC3 on it to push it a little bit but I have a feeling its fine.
