Hey guys,

I have an athlon 64 dual core 4200+ and an asus a8n, with 600watt power supply and a geforce 7600gt...

this thing will not stay running for more than 2 - 3 hours. It just shuts off wehter im using it or letting it just sit. It powers down as if somebody were to unplug it. Does anybody have any ideas as to what the problem could be?

Nothing seems to be running too hot or anything... :mad:
 
ok - so i've narrowed it down.

It's only when im playing a game or something like that...
Any advice?
I was thinking maybe the temps are getting high, but wouldn't i get an audible warning, first?
 
I am not sure about that board, but mine doesn't make any noise when temps get too high, nor would most I would imagine. Plus, if the problem is what I think it is, it wouldn't get the chance.

Your PSU is more than capable of powering that system, but check to make sure all of the fans are working properly.

I had a similar problem a few years ago, and it turned out the fan on the PSU had died, so every time the PSU overheated, boom, the system went down. Pulling it and putting in a new PSU solved the issue.
 
What brand of PSU is it? If it is a cheapy, it may not really be able to run your system and is crapping out at high load.
 
Make sure you're getting at least 24A on the +12V rail(s). I set my PCs to alarm when the CPU temp gets too high.
 
sounds like either CPU or the vid card is overheating.. what temps are you running? Try with the side panel off and see if it helps at all...
 
The power supply is a cooler master 600w. I checked all of the fans and they seem to be doing ok.

As suggested, I ran the system with the side panels off and it still does the same thing.
Processor temps top out at 42C, motherboard @ around 41C.

Are you OCing or overvolting at all? If so, return everything to stock. I have no experience with current AMD processors or their mobos so I don't know if those temps are out of the ordinary or not.

If everything is running at stock, try pulling everything but one RAM stick, and alternate and see if you can find one stable. If that doesn't work, try re-installing the OS. If you still can't get it stable it might be time to RMA some parts.

My coolermaster 500 wouldnt run my system, I to splice in aonther 300w PS to run the vid card. My issue was the exact same. My PC would just die, but ONLY in 3d.

No OCing, everythings at stock settings.

As for who said the comment about their coolermaster psu doing the same thing.. these are pricey power supplies to be having issues like that! :eek:

now, I do know a little bit about computers, and I do know that this powersupply probably isn't capable of handling your system.

see the glaring differences? since the 3.3V and 5V rails power the motherboard and CPU, I'd say that your system is underpowered.

You could be right, I checked my old Enermax 430W PSU and it has
35A on 3.3V
44A on 5V
Quite a difference from the Coolermaster 600W's
20A on 3.3V
20A on 5V

Its strange if this is the problem as Coolermaster are sure to know how to build a PSU for a PC.

well have you tried running the computer with the old Enermax? I know the 7900GT specs page says it requires 28A on the +12V rails, but my 7800GT ran fine on my trusty old FSP 530W which had 18A.

Could have just been a lucky as FSP psus are workhorses

I am using the 430W with a 15A 12V rail to power my system with an X1800XT, all overclocked. The XT is specced to need 24A for the system so its doing well!
It works fine for days and days but is unstable while doing the post while overclocked.
It can take 4 attempts to boot as it locks up after the memory test the requires me to go into the BIOS, retry etc.

(ps I'm not the thread starter just a contributer :))
