I was wondering if there is currently a high quality CAR racing game out right now.

I'm looking for something that has true to life cars and plenty of them, there was a game I used to play on ps2. (not NFS but something with alot more cars where you earn points/money to upgrade your car and purchase new ones.) I really enjoyed it. So if anyone knows of something it would be appreciated.

Edit: Oh and not drag racing or nascar, real track/road racing
The game I was trying to remember was Gran Turismo, something like that but newer on pc.

G.T.R. 2 Game of the Year Edition is probably the best one out, right now.

My question is :

Where the hell is Forza 2 for PC? It would make a hell of a good "Games for Windows" release.

Check out Dirt, best racing game I've played in a long time, but multiplayer is lacking. Worst interface ever, but the graphics are just amazing.

From your description, you may want to check out the new Test Drive that was just released for PC.

Check out Live for Speed. You can google it and DL the demo. It is only available for purchase online. Supports 32 players per race, lots of different cars as well as tracks. Open wheel as well as GT. The physics are outstanding, I race real cars and it is a close as any game has gotten. Check it out, you will not be dissapointed. Of and BTW, buy a wheel, don' t mess around with a KB and mouse, or worse yet joystick.

TDU is ridden with bugs that Atari has not fixed since release. I would not recommend that game until some sort of patch is done to it.

And some ppl have not ever had a problem with it, some have. Read up on the Test Drive Unlimited forums and you will see what I mean.

The beta was so promising too... I remember one bug when i bought my 73 Firebird T/A with the 455SD and the shaker (yes, i like the car. :p ) ... Random bits of grass would turn in to half of the firebird painting on the hood :D was fecking hilarious lmao ive lost my screenshot of it though :(

Test drive was a little whack.

I love Live for Speed. It's probably the best racing game available for PC.

Best racing sim ever: Gran Prix Legends
second best: Nascar racing 2003

both are very old but the thrill is still there. These are high quality Sims with excellent physics and crash damage, not third person arcade games.
Best enjoyed on-line and with a good steering wheel.

man people beat me to it... Trackmania FTW
awesome game to play by yourself, online and expecially at LANs.... MPCON anyone?:D

I just went to try GTR2, but it is missing the component that makes these racing games more interesting for me, and that the original question was asking about.

He was looking for some kind of career mode where you gain money to upgrade your cars and buy new ones. That was what made GranTourismo so addictive to me. Need for Speed carbon has it, but it is not as accurate as need for speed and is more of an arcade racing game not a simulator.

I have to play GTR2 a little more but it doesn't have any kind of career mode to keep me interested. Even Need For Speed Carbon kept me playing for a week or more despite the fact that it wasn't the best racing game out there.

There aren't many games out there that are sim racing that has the arcade style of career mode, suping up cars and such..that I know of at least. I've looked myself, couldn't find one, and stuck with Need for Speed: Carbon. I like sim racing too, but its what I had to stick with to get the upgrade portion which I like..

EDIT: Great, this looks like a thread to where they ask a question like that and never look back at the thread...he hasn't responded to anything yet...

I didn't like need for speed carbon because they limited what upgrades you could buy and are limited by how much money you can earn (repeating races only gives a small reward). You cant get enough money to have many cars, (i only played 2 sections of the game maybe it changes later)

I was thrilled in the original Gran Tourismo when I could soup up my 3000GT, and my dodge Viper , and my... etc.

Dirt is damn good fun and superb graphics!

It's also very white knuckle driving style, which I find is really awesome.
On a few of the maps I found my self in "The Zone" taking corners at 110kph that my co-driver said I should do in 2nd gear. Dodging past curves and really flying over the jumps. I think I forgot to blink for about 3 mins at one point!

At first I was annoyed by how badly I sucked at the game... it was so hard even on clubman difficulty, but after you get use to the style and the cars, anything lower then Pro-Am seems easy.

It's a really nice looking game also.

i just bought a logitech MOMO wheel and am anxiously waiting for it to arrive to start playing DIRT and NFS Carbon

Yea OP if you are willing to play with some off road racing dirt is a great game(have it for the 360) Has some road rally tracks it it but most of the stuff is offroad. Picked it up friday and have played it a good part of the day which I was reloading some pcs for a client. Racing with some of the bigger trucks is fun(as is going 100+ mph offroad in a car)

I was going to say test drives newest game but it seems like it has bugs based on what others have said. Personaly don't like the newer need for speed games.

Went to try trackmania the other day(the older version that is now free) but when I noticed it had starforce I deleted it(got a driver error where my machine wouldn't allow it to install it). Starforce caused me way to many issues in the past where it screw with my notebooks dvd burner. Will not support any title that has it(free or pay). Sucks too as trackmania looked interesting.

GTR = no-mercy-hardcore-fun-amazing-game-which-I-loved

GTR2 = a-bit-more-forgiving-fun-as-hell-too.

LFS = could be called a mix of GTR and GTR2

RBR = AMAZING

ive played NFS since day 1 and i always return to it... something about the physics and the amount of toggling buttons on hte keyboard... NFSMW is way better than carbon imo....

i just downloaded toca race driver 3 for 18 from codemasters.. probably one of the better FF wheel games out there... GPL is also great but OLDDDD...

nascar is awful.... i just can't get myself to have interest driving in an oval, and some of the road tracks racing the nascar cars is fairly difficult....

my all time favorite race game that sadly doesnt run on XP is Rally Championship 2000... its the game that made me upgrade and get into computers...

Live for Speed is probably the most realistic racing simulation you will find anywhere. If you want to be able to tear ass around the track at top speed on your first run, its not for you. Likely you will be spinning out on every corner until you learn some basic racing principles, and will be getting completely destroyed by the veteran players online until... well probably forever.

Flatout 2 is all out mayhem, lot's of fun but hardly serious. One of the few racing games I've ever played through to 100% completion.

I'm in the mood for a racing game and maybe something off road, I don't have a steering wheel, would something like Dirt be OK for an amature like me, or is it just frustrating for anyone who isn't into this stuff 100%

You will enjoy CM:Dirt - it combines the thrills of RBR and has the friendliness of NFS's.

Dirt is the best PC racer I've played in a while.

Flatout 2 and Trackmania Sunrise also recommended.

I tried Colin Mcrae DiRT a few days ago and was hooked, I love the off road power sliding amongst trees, and along roads with the back of your hanging off a cliff.

I got a Logitech Forumla Force Ex, drivers arent available for Vista 64bit (only 32bit) so I've not got force feedback working, but so far the pedals and the steering are quality, it's a fantastic build for £40, not the cheapest wheel about but certainly nothing pricey, good for first timers like me I think :)

DiRT has starforce...

If thats the case I would recomend to everyone that they avoid it for the pc. Sad too as it is a great game.

I'd rather load kazza on a machine then that shit.

Seriously. My bro has a 360 so I've been lucky enough to sink my teeth into the career mode for this game it is outstanding: hands down, the greatest racer I have ever played. The graphics, realism, customization, and attention to detail in this game is crazy.

Sadly, if it ever comes to PC I will be forced to either buy a wheel, or a 360 controller. I bought a Logitech Rumblepad 2 about a year ago... tried playing GTR 2 using one analog stick for acceleration/brake, and the other for steering, and it just feels weird. I need triggers or pedals. Damnit.
