I have an hp computer. I just bought some new ram for it, the same as it had, i now have a 512 stick it had 256 * 2. Her eis what happens, i press the power button on, The copmputer goes straight into hibernation mode. I get no output on the monitor, it stays black. I see that the hard drive is being read, but after 5 seconds from power up it goes straight into what appears to be hibernation. cntrl alt del does nothing. since nothing worked, i put the old ram in the 2 256's and it does the same thing. Since i have nothing on the monitor showing up i can't do anything, i've checked all the cables and all is fine there.
 
The machine is an hp pavillion 514n, when i put the 512 in i put it in the closest slot to the front of the tower, and also had the 256 in at the time. When i tried to power it up nothing happens, but when i put the 2 *256's in it appears to boot, and i still get no output on the screen. HP support won't help since the warranty is no longer valid. Any clues? When the tower powers up, the monitor light is green, and then a few seconds later it goes to a yellow light, but not blinking just always on.
 
The graphics are built in, and all i have are pci slots, with no pci graphics cards to test. Could it be the graphics?
 
try clearing your bios. are you sure the new ram you got is the same type/speed as your old ram?
 
You said you left one of the 256k sticks in with the 512 stick? If this is the case, take out the 256 and run the 512 by itself. Sometimes boards dont play well with different brands / size ram. If the 2x256 are not working now try one or the other. If that dosent work I would start swapping parts if possible.

its the ram, try using just the new one only, and see if it comes on, if it doesnt, return it. pc's like hp's won't read 2 different ram, even if the seem identical.
 
Thanks for the help clearing the cmos fixed the problem, does anyone know why such a thing happens? It makes no sense to me, but i'm happy it's fixed, thanks again
