Please give us more detailed information about what is happenning to the PC. Are you getting BSOD's when it reboots? Does it just shut off? Do you even make it into windows? Is it a new build?

Answer some of these questions and then maybe we can help you out.

I'm going to assume you're running XP, since you didn't mention the OS version.

Do you have the system set to automatically restart on a blue screen? If so, boot into safemode and turn this option off. Instead of restarting, you should see a blue screen (BSOD) with an error code. Use that error code to help you debug the problem.

If you still don't get a BSOD, you can try a repair install with the windows cd. Proceed as if you were going to install, and it should detect the old installation if you tell it to install on the same drive. Once it detects the old version, it will ask you if you'd like to repair. If the option never comes up, the current installation is most likely hosed.

Thanks for the responses guys. The computer does make it to windows, loads up and then restarts. There is no BSOD, and this isn't a new computer. I will try to repair windows but does it erase whats in it? Btw its running windows xp.

The reason I don't want to reformat it is because its my friends computer that he runs his POS system for his restaurant. If anyone know what that is, it's a program that handles all your cashier stuff on a computer and touch screen. This program was expensive, and it will be hard for him to reinstall. Any ideas?

Are you sure its not a BSOD? So you already changed it to not restart automatically? Check Event viewer to see if it shows you anything helpful. A repair install just clears out mostly the driver files, so all the programs and stuff should still run fine after a repair.

Thanks guys for the feedback. I'm going to start working on this computer tonight. I will update for you.
