Hi,

I've had this PC Power Cooling 850 SSI for a while and recently had to draft it into service when my Enermax psu had compatibility issues with Evga Classified i7 920 setup. The 850 SSI so far works though have not tested in severe gaming tests. But was wondering if it can handle a couple 8800gtx and an i7 920 and few harddrives and 8 fans?

The SSI part also confuses me... One less rail becuase i don;t have an extra cpu?

Thank you.

The spec sheet says it has 2 16A rails for cpus and a 30A rail for drives & graphics. A quick web search says the card's thermal design power (most it should theoretically draw) is around 185W. NV made specs on 8000 series and older cards hard to get on their wed site, so I'm not sure about this. So now things get dicey. In theory those 6-pin connectors are rated at 75W each, so the boards could be pulling up to 25A off the 30A rail. For 8 fans and a few drives + presumably an optical 5A isn't enough. But the PCI-e slots can provide 60W each so the load on that line could be as low as 21A, and of course the cards may not actually ever hit their TDP when gaming so there's a good chance it'll be ok. Max actual draw is typically less. The other problem is I have no idea how those 2 16A rails are used. That PSU has an EPS12V, P4 12V, and a 24-pin main connector. Somehow 2 rails are split up between those 3 connections, and it's possible one or more of them use both rails on different wires. Even if it can't merge them as your post seems to suggest, it should be possible to hook up the wires so both rails are feeding the board. But how? No clue.

So, I think the answer is a definite maybe. You have plenty of juice, it's just a question of where it's going. I figure there's a good chance it'll work fine since the cards probably won't actually hit TDP and they'll pull some power from the slot. Just don't run FurMark on it. That thing is designed to make cards use as much power as possible in a lot of cases makes then exceed TDP.

I don't think I'll be doing any heavy gaming on it right now. I built this for video encoding and stuff like that though I wouldn't mind going tri sli. The motherboard is the classified and I read that when over clocking your i7 could pull over 300 watts alone just off of one eight pin plug and this board has two eight pin connectors!

I think Antec has a 1200 watt Quattro comming out soon. Wonder about Antec psu quality...

Thanks.

That PSU is plenty for the hardware you'll be running on it. Although it has 54A on the +12V rails, which is not that much compared to its total rated output, you've still got plenty of power for your hardware.

For now maybe it has enough power, but once I start overclocking I'm seriously worried that multigpu use could bring it down. So I was also wondering can you kill your system if your psu blows up on you from not being strong enough?

That PSU won't blow up. At worst, you'll trip the OCP, which will cause the PSU to shut off without harming itself or your components. And the PSU is still enough for your hardware with overclocking.
