Hey everyone,

I am here to gt an opinion. I am saving up about 4000 to buya new computer in the summer for mainly video editing and some gaming. I was either thinking about going with the highest dual processor from mac at the time i buy it or going with a dual dual core processor from intel(yes 2 dual cores) at 3.6ghz per core when they come out. Just give me yur opinion of which to go with and any reasons why.

Thank you in advance with your help and also any links on news about dual cores is welcome and any links relating to this topic

i doubt dual dual 3.6's will be able to come in under 4k.

You need to do some serious thinking (Yes, thinking; not drinking.)

This really breaks down to which platform you want to work with for the next few years.

If you're dropping $4000 on a workstation, figure out your priorities.

Which video editing software do you want to work with? If you want to use Final Cut Pro HD, then the only choice you have would be the G5. You can find good video editing softwarefor the PC as well, but a couple of people I work with who do video for a living swear byFinal Cut Pro HD.

Are you planning to do motion graphics for you video's as well? Adobe After Effects is
available on both the PC and Mac platforms and takes advantage of both processors.
Mac just released 'Motion' which is a motion graphics program that costs much less
than After Effects, but isn't quite as robust.

What games do you want to play? Not every game comes out for the Mac platform. Also, if you are using this machine for gaming, most games won't take advantage of a dual proc set up.

There is a thread somewhere on the first page here that has a list of multi proc aware
software for the pc. I would look at that then and figure out what type of editing and content creation software you would use to take advantage of a dual system.

If you're going to drop that kind of cash on a system, you really need to figure out what
software you want to use.

Hey thankyou for the help and this is a reply to two posts. The first is the new dual cores at 3.2ghx each will start at 630 from what i have heard from my sources. Also the person who talked about criteria, I will mainly want to stick with adobe programs as i have them now and also i will be attaining Avid soon which i have worked with and like so if that helps. Also i want to be doing some gaming bu tthat is not a deciding factor. so if i can play good if not too bad. So thankyou very much and keep the help coming.

I would probably go for the dual G5 (becuase people seem to like them better for visual editing; maybe its because of proc architecture?) since it has a good cooling system for the cpus and becuase they look sweet :D But for all seriousness it depends on what you're comfortable with.

alright thankyou. well i believe as of now i will probably go dual dual core proessors at 3.2 ghz with 2.5gb RAM and 1.5TB hdd. So i Think i will be set and can def. get that under 4000 with some connections i got. so just let me know what yah think and keep it coming.

with those kinds of specs, it sounds like you'll be set. but what kind of video card are you planning on getting?

By the summer, Apple is supposed to have a dual core G5 either out there or close on the way. You see, Apple is more cagey than Intel about releasing roadmaps. Check macrumors.com, thinksecret and the inquirer.net and the register.com for hints.

Also, which OS is better at taking advantage of the dual processors?

If single core, I am pretty sure that the 970 GX will be released by June and will easily reach 3.0 GHz with a 1 MB L2 cache. So dual 3.0 GHz liquid cooled like the current 2.5 GHz. Also look for PCI express, Bluetooth 2.0, but maybe not SATA-II yet.

The dual core might follow a bit after that.

A NASA study posted in July, 2003 compared the G5 to the P4.

The G5 at 2 GHz was about 32% faster than the 2 GHz P4 and within 1 MFLOP of the 2.66 GHz P4. I don't think it had integer performance and I forgot which is more important for your apps.

Private message me, and I will e-mail you the study.

Now of course both chips have evolved since then. I think the G5 back then had 256k L2 cache, while the P4 had 512k, and now both have doubled the cache. Also P4 now has hyperthreading. But, the P4 now is very poor on heat output and power requirements. The G5 has improved significantly on these factors.

I think the P4 dualies will be based on the Pentium-M so that will solve the heat and power requirements. Oh yeah- if the P4 dualies are based on Pentium-M I don't think the GHz will be as high- this is an important factor for the floating point and integer performance of the chips. The Inquirer says the Intel dualies will be 2.5 GHz: http://www.theinquirer.net/?article=21091.

Hope this helps. ;)

why doesnt anyone compare a G5 to a AMDFX55 or the top of the line Intel proc.
I mean Dual G5s is Apples top of the line right? so why not compare it to its rightful compettitor? If this has been done I would love to see a link.

gaming on a mac would suck balls... so if gaming is a necessity, forget the mac.

However, video editing can go either way. You can do everything a mac can do, AND A LOT MORE, on a PC, but when you buy the mac everything will be setup and ready to go. For the PC you'll need to buy video editing software and while it will probably be more robust than even Final Cut Pro HD (the only reason people swear by FCP is because they've never used anything else [on a mac or pc] and as such they are falling victim to the ungrounded claim that Apple is the best platform for media and content creation, which simply isn't true) it will undoubtedly cost a ton.

The problem with mac is that there is no *cheap* upgradeability. With the PC you'll be able to go to the store in a year and get dual dualcore 4.5GHz Xeons (maybe). You might be able to do that on the Mac, but you'll have to go through apple and/or authorized dealer which will cost more than even teh video editing software that you'll need to buy for your PC.

Realistically going mac is a bad idea. I am willing to bet that 90% of the people that rely on macs (individuals and businesses) do so because they don't want to re-educate themselves or their staff (plus the initial cost of migrating from one to the other will be pretty high) -- same thing can be seen in programming.... there are still companies that use fortran and COBOL simply because they don't want to dish out the cash to convert to something better (even though it would save them money in the long run).

Not only that but PCs are funner....

My recommendation is for the PC.

peace,
OriginalOCer

p.s. $4000 isn't going to be enough for dually dualcore 3.6GHz I think... especially if you buy it right after its released. Flagship proc is like $1000 x 2, then youll want at least 2gigs of ram (which will probably need to be the more expensive reg/ecc stuff), and lots of HDD... OH and the mobo is going to be like $300-500. If you're getting all that goodness you may as well get a top of the line video card as well, and a top of the monitor (which will be $1000 itself).... Plus Tax.

O.K. OriginalOCer you are right about gaming for sure.
Sorry about gettinng the CPU speeds wrong on Intel dualies. I was incoherent at that hour.

Hey. I got two things to say. First of all is the speed and cost of the new intel dual cores is prolly gonna be about 640 for the the 3.2ghz as seen in the link below. Also I will be abel to build a very beasr machine for 4000 seeing i get parts at HUGE discount from connections. And last is video card i plan on going with the best one avaible at that time, but i dont want to use a worksation card like the quadrofx series, i will get something like the x850xt pe.

Dual Core Opterons will be out before Intel, and AMD makes suprerior proc for gaming.
